Meet Dennis Sengthong | Dennis Sengthong | 3D Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dennis Sengthong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dennis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career not only to express myself through art but also to feed my curious side regarding technology. 3D design is a unique mix of texture exploration, lighting challenges, and dimensional composition. It’s a never-ending canvas, and I love that. That’s what ultimately drives me to create every day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art has always been about expression, especially what is swirling in my head.
I like to create imaginary slices of life or scenes that portray a mood or emotion. I’m obsessed with the idea of “Noonchi,” a “Korean concept signifying the subtle art and ability to listen and gauge others’ moods.” I try to incorporate that into my art.
I am crafting not only fantastic-looking 3D art but also a story to go along with that. Sometimes the location is grounded, and the objects have meaning. This doesn’t mean that abstraction is absent, though. The use of imagery to build tension and give attention to a sliver of light or shadows cascading. Hoping to reach an emotion within someone.
I’ve also learned that creating work that means a lot to you can be heavy, and sometimes you must let go and give in to what your instincts tell you without scrutinizing your own work.
I’m especially proud of my Stop Asian Hate series. The pieces The Chrysanthemum, The Lotus, and The Orchid.
It showcases three flowers of Asian origin being contained, suffocated, and examined. Despite the harrowing circumstances, they can thrive and remain resilient.
These pieces showed me how vulnerable but impactful my pieces can be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many spots just nearby that I would take them!
Elysian Park is a great place to chill and be amongst the outdoors. Bar Flores if they wanted some nice cocktails with a great patio. Bloom & Plume Coffee for the needed caffeine kick, and of course, you can’t bring people here without mentioning The Broad and what they are showcasing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My greatest shoutouts are to my girlfriend Emily Gawronski, an incredible artist who has inspired me for the past ten years. Grant and Kat Lillvis who have always supported my work. and of course, always a shoutout to my mom Soutta who never doubted my career path into art.
Without all these people, I truly wouldn’t be who I am today. Emily’s miniature claymation creations always spark ideas and motion-inspired pieces.
