Meet Denys Hohlov

We had the good fortune of connecting with Denys Hohlov and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denys, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Question: What was your thought process behind starting your own business? Answer:
My career started humbly at a regional FM radio station where, despite having no experience, I was determined to become a journalist. I volunteered for unpaid work and eventually gained responsibility for writing ads and sponsorship scripts. This experience propelled me into a successful advertising role, and soon I became the youngest advertising director in the region, eventually co-owning a media company that included radio, TV, and newspapers. With a passion for the event industry, I moved into event marketing, organizing major shows and brand presentations. This decision to work for myself was pivotal and led to a 25+ year career across international markets. Now, my company NovaTech Innovations in Los Angeles pioneers technology for event production, including robotic and kinetic light installations, with a focus on providing unforgettable experiences for clients.

What do people outside of your industry likely not know about it?
One of the joys of my business is the constant learning and creativity involved. Each new project requires deep research into our client’s culture, values, and audience. Unlike routine jobs, we face new challenges every day that push our creative and technical limits, which keeps our work dynamic and highly rewarding.
What are your thoughts on risk, and how has risk shaped your career?
I appreciate Denis Waitley’s quote: “Life is inherently risky. The biggest risk is doing nothing.” For me, taking calculated risks has always been crucial to progress. From large acquisitions to complex negotiations, each risk taken was an investment in growth. Embracing risk is essential in business—it propels us forward and fuels success.
Besides choosing to work for yourself, what is the most important decision that contributed to your success?
There isn’t one single decision but a series of moments. Success is achieved through persistence and resilience. Challenges are inevitable, but a steadfast belief in one’s ideas and continuous hard work are key.

What is the most important factor behind your success?
Creativity and innovation drive us. In event marketing, clients seek fresh, unique experiences, as audiences today are more discerning. NovaTech specializes in delivering the “wow” factor with imaginative, technically advanced solutions, ensuring every event we work on is memorable.

What was the hardest decision you ever had to make?
Answer:
When you have a clear goal and challenging tasks, no decision seems insurmountable. Even difficult choices are simply part of the business process.

How has your work-life balance changed over time?
Balancing work and personal life has been a challenge. Early in my career, my work required long hours and frequent travel, which took time away from family. As the company grew and became more structured, I gained the freedom to spend more time with my family.

Do you have a favorite quote? What does it mean to you?
Mary Lou Cook once said, “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” This quote resonates with my philosophy. In our daily work, we continuously innovate and take creative risks, like developing art installations and new LED fixtures. This is the essence of our enjoyment and growth.

Why pursue a creative career?
It’s incredibly interesting! You always learn a lot of new things, meet interesting and even extraordinary people. With each new project, we must become experts in a particular field. And the people we interact with are so diverse and interesting. For example, today, we’re preparing a show for the CES Exhibition in Las Vegas for a telecommunications company; tomorrow, we’ll be rehearsing with a famous musician for a music show, and the day after, we’ll be filming an ad for a lingerie brand with our large KUKA robots.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave?
I’ve often reflected on this. If you’re an artist, your work lives on, but what about the rest of us? I hope to leave behind a legacy as a good person who brought happiness in small ways. I want my children to be proud, my friends to know they can count on me, and for people to remember me as “a genuine person.”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are NovaTech Innovations, based in Los Angeles. We specialize in innovations for the entertainment, event, wedding, and birthday industries. Our company focuses on cutting-edge robotic technology, kinetic lighting winches, and custom LED installations for events.
We have our own technical base, including KUKA robots, kinetic winches, and unique LED installations. We also have our own production facility where we design and create extraordinary lighting solutions for both high-speed winches and robots, such as our recently developed SuperNova dynamic LED devices, which combine lighting and decorative elements.
One of our standout offerings is our RoboBar – a highly unique device for any occasion. The KUKA industrial robot can serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, catering to events with 10 to 500 guests. The RoboBar is extremely popular among our clients.
We also have a showroom in Los Angeles and our own rehearsal space. In addition to renting out innovative equipment, we produce shows featuring robots, kinetic winches, and LED installations. Our team has years of experience creating extraordinary performances with these advanced technologies.
While our office is based in Los Angeles, we frequently travel across the country with our equipment and shows. We also plan to open offices in Las Vegas and New York in the closes future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Short story from first person, me – Next week, my good friend is visiting Los Angeles, and I’ve planned an unforgettable few days. We’ll start with a visit to The Getty Center to take in world-class art, stroll through the gardens, and enjoy stunning city views. Afterward, we’ll head to the Downtown LA Arts District, where we can admire vibrant murals and explore unique galleries. We’ll grab lunch at a local food spot and enjoy the colorful energy of the area.
On the second day, we’ll visit Elysian Park, a peaceful spot with panoramic views of downtown and Dodger Stadium, before making our way to Los Feliz and Silver Lake to explore cool indie boutiques, coffee shops, and street art. No trip to LA is complete without a stop at The Last Bookstore, one of the quirkiest, most Instagrammable spots in town. It’s a bookstore and art gallery in one!
The following day, we’ll head to Point Dume in Malibu for a relaxing day at the beach, away from the crowds. After soaking in the ocean views, we’ll stop by Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice for boutique shopping and people-watching at some of the coolest cafes and shops in town.
For the final day, we’ll go to Griffith Observatory for breathtaking views of the city skyline and the iconic Hollywood sign. We’ll wrap up our trip with some time at Manhattan Beach, another stunning coastal spot.
Evenings will be filled with delicious dinners and fun drinks. We’ll start with Employees Only, a stylish bar with great cocktails, and then head over to Death & Co.
A speakeasy inside Cole’s French Dip that promises an unforgettable experience, a classic LA spot known for its history and unforgettable atmosphere.
This should give my friend a taste of both the iconic and the local, hidden gems that make LA so unique.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In my 25 years in business, I’ve had support and advice from many different people and companies. But the person I most want to thank is my wife. When we married, I was in a tough place, transitioning from a media job to starting my own business, which was financially and emotionally challenging. She stood by me through risky projects and financial strain, lifting me up even when I was close to giving up. Her love and support made me the successful businessman I am today, while she raised our children and cared for our home.
Now, our eldest son is a lead engineer, programming robotics and lighting installations. Sometimes, our seven-year-old daughter even visits my office, helping with creative sketches for advertising and shows—always with utmost seriousness. My wife and children are, without a doubt, the most important people in my life.
