We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Emery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derek, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is the number one criteria of being an entrepreneur. As a general rule, employees are in the safe zone by choice and the owner or professional who employs them has his or her life on the line. Without the risk taker, the entrepreneur, a society will no doubt fall into a socialistic or even a communistic way of life which has never one time in history been successful. I have been a risk taker my business career and have found I have failed four out of every five attempts at success which is about normal for the entrepreneur. The four failures have been a lesson in life and a financial hit, but the one time I succeeded it has paid massive dividends. Being a risk taking entrepreneur is not for the faint-hearted.
What should our readers know about your business?
As the co-owner and CEO of CarStub.com, I wanted to create a unique done-for-you service for busy people to sell their used vehicle hassle free. Since all vehicles have a title and registration, each vehicle that gets sold has to have proper DMV transfer paperwork which can at times be problematic. At CarStub.com, we have industry professionals evaluate a used vehicle in someone’s driveway and then make a purchase offer. If accepted, all the DMV paperwork is signed right there and then it’s processed through our in-house DMV department. We basically have alleviated the hassle of trying to sell a vehicle private party and then going to AAA or DMV to finalize the paperwork. We also have the vehicle picked up by one of our transportation companies in minutes.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, like all entrepreneurs and business owners, we work a lot of hours and are under a lot of stress. So, we need to get some sort of relief! My ultimate week long getaway is to start off at Rosenthal wine tasting in Malibu and enjoy the Malibu atmosphere and wonderful wine. After that, it’s off to Santa Barbara and Solvang for good food and more great wine. Then, it’s off to Paso Robles to drink the place dry! As everyone knows, California is famous for wine but most consider Napa Valley as having the best of California wine. In fact, Paso Robles not only has the best wine in California, but in the entire world! It is incredible. Of course always have a designated driver.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As an entrepreneur and a business owner (yes, there is a difference) I have had many mentors over the years. In fact, too many to count. However, the one who has had the biggest impact and led me to huge financial success is Dan S. Kennedy. Dan is an author of many business books, informercial producer, copywriter, public speaker, and business genius. Dan can bring out the entrepreneurial spirit in anyone as well as keep them on a very pragmatic course throughout their business career.
