We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Levy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derek, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My lifestyle drove me. I grew up in Hermosa Beach and have surfed for 60 years. In my late teens, I realized how lucky I was to live there. But, I could not expect to continue living with my Dad, and professional surfing at that time paid very little, so I went to college to become a Chiropractor.

What should our readers know about your business?
I feel that the fact that I have been in practice the longest makes me stand out from the other Chiropractors in my area. Also, I’m very fair in my pricing with the folks that don’t have insurance. I don’t up-sell my patients and don’t over-treat them. My mantra is “If you hurt, see me; If you feel good, don’t see me.” I don’t make people wait to come in-I will fit patients in on the day they call. I’m also quick with treatment time, getting the patients back to their day. Also, my pet peeve is having patients waiting a long time in my waiting room–I do my best to get them into my treatment rooms quickly. Since I still live and practice in Hermosa Beach, my brand is relaxed and beachy, which shows in my personality and office vibe.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Every day we would go to the beach, either to walk on the strand, lie in the sand, or enjoy the water. There are great restaurants in Hermosa Beach– I’m a huge fan of Mexican food, in which Hermosa has a ton of choices. Hermosa also has a wonderful promenade at the base of Hermosa Pier, where there are great restaurants, bars, and shopping. Palos Verdes is just to the south of Hermosa. There are great views from Palos Verdes Drive where you can view the ocean to Catalina Island. Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes is a great place to visit or stay. On either side of Hermosa Beach are Redondo Beach to the south and Manhattan Beach to the north. Both communities have plenty to offer visitors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, Brenda, is the source of my success. I’ve been practicing Chiropractic for over 40 years, so I’m good at what I do (5 days a week, 8 hours a day for 42 years–I’d better be at least OK or something would seriously be wrong with me!). But Brenda is the business person behind my practice. All of the billing, staffing, office decor, contracts, and even the way I dress are all controlled by Brenda. I certainly would not have survived in this business without her.
