We had the good fortune of connecting with Destinee Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Destinee, how do you think about risk?
Risk is nothing but the physical act of faith. Faith is the spirituality of risk. Since my adolescent years, my soul has always seemed to gravitate toward living in California. This year I took one of the biggest risks of my life by fulfilling that soul craving. I pushed myself to break free from fearing the unknown and I’d say it has been worth it in every way. The risk I took by moving from the East Coast to the West Coast, propelled me into a higher consciousness of who I am, what I truly want out of life, and navigating the path to accomplishing those things. I think of risk as simply having the courage to go after the things you wish to bring to fruition.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist. I resonate more with doing things that truly bring me joy and fulfill my soul. The creation of my business is what I’m mostly proud and excited about. Acting is my passion but it is not my identity. I try not to limit myself because there’s many parts of my career that allow me to express my creativity. Creating opportunities for the future generations to come. Im proud of myself for how far I’ve come because it hasn’t been a linear path. Before I graduated college, I remember I received an invitation to audition for my agent. I was upstate NY and had to quickly decide if I would travel the next day to the city. I stepped out on faith, traveled through inclement weather conditions and still attended the audition. I’ll never forget the first agency to sign me which opened the door to many more opportunities. My ability to persevere through the obstacles on my path is what has given me the strength to go after all my dreams & goals. My perfectionist mind is always on overdrive but overtime I’ve learned to release control and focus on the things that are within my control. Being self aware has allowed me to make adjustments and work on my inner self. I’m not too worried about putting timelines on when things should happen, I just try to savior the present moment and continue to focus on the things I ought to accomplish.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh boy, to truly sit down and try to think of all the different places to go and things to do in California is overwhelming. Living in Los Ángeles has been such a dream. I would want my best friends to experience the feeling of endless possibilities. There’s literally something to do for each type of person. For my nature lovers, there’s a plethora of national parks and hikes I’d take my friends on. We’d head to the Griffith Observatory where they can see a beautiful landscape of the city of Los Ángeles. The great weather and laid back atmosphere is perfect for all sorts of adventures. Disneyland and Universal Studios would definitely be on the itinerary, followed by the many options of fancy or modest rooftop restaurants. I’d take them to the Hollywood walk of fame which reminds me of Time Square in NYC. When I worked as a Canvasser for an LA city council political campaign, I had the opportunity to view some beautiful estates. The type of homes and mansions that one could only dream of. That served as so much inspiration because it showed me in physical form that it’s out there, it exist. So I think I’d love to take my friends on a sort of aesthetic viewing to show them the many beautiful parts of LA which is only a fraction of California itself. Oh and can’t forget the Santa Monica pier. That’s definitely on the list.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is a special someone who deserves a shoutout and that’s my mom. Her selfless sacrifices to invest in my hopes and dreams fueled my path. I can be the manifestation of her prayers and hopes for me. Now that I’m older, I can see how much she has sacrificed for me and I want to say that I’m so grateful for it all. Because of her, I have the vision to reach for my dreams, and the grit to push through the challenges that are in my way. It feels good to have a loving select few of friends & family who encourage you and want to see you succeed. When you really think about it, there’s a lot to be grateful for.
