We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

Throughout my life, I’ve always felt torn between two big loves: music and healing. I never saw myself fitting into the traditional work environment, and felt that my interests, gifts and abilities fell outside of a “conventional” path.

I grew up performing as a professionally trained singer/songwriter and studied at USC’s music program to pursue my dreams of being an artist. Around that time, I had a major spiritual awakening. I became obsessed with meditation, energy, alternative healing modalities, and all things metaphysical. It felt like I had stumbled upon something truly magical and my true purpose.

I started my business as an intuitive reader, meditation guide, and vocal sound healer 3 ½ years ago after an extremely challenging period in my life. This experience taught me the power of living life intuitively – meaning, listening to the voice in your head and the feeling in your gut, that just knows. That knows when something is or isn’t right for you.

Trusting my intuition completely changed my life. It was like something had been turned on in me after a very long time of being asleep. My life felt more magical, aligned and meaningful, and I started to trust and love myself more deeply than I ever had before.

I created my business to share these gifts with others – both by offering my intuitive guidance through readings, and also (most importantly!) helping my clients to connect with their own intuition. I strongly believe that we are all intuitively gifted, it’s just a matter of practicing and honoring our intuitive guidance.

I started by offering intuitive readings to friends and family, and through word of mouth I began expanding my business. I experienced so much joy in helping people find more clarity in their lives and navigate difficult decisions through a spiritual lens. It’s been so much fun to see the accuracy of my intuitive readings – for example, getting confirmation from a client when I share a message they really need to hear or bring up an idea they’ve had but haven’t told anyone about yet. It’s just the most fulfilling feeling.

Currently, my dream is to integrate my passion for spirituality/holistic healing with my love for music. I’m really excited about using my voice as an instrument for healing, during live events like sound baths and also in recordings. Musical frequencies have a unique ability to affect our bodies, and I’m exploring singing channeled melodies/tones to facilitate healing for others on a physical and emotional level. It’s fascinating and is a perfect blend of music and healing, art and science. It’s a full-circle moment for me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I’ve always wanted to reimagine and reinvent the world we live in. There’s so much in our society that I see the potential to change – the way we treat our planet and nature, the way we build our communities, the way we work, the way we feel and process our emotions, and so much more.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt the urge that I need to do something about this. I just wasn’t sure how, or through what vehicle.

The year 2020 marked a big turning point for my spiritual and professional journey. With the world shut down and spending so much time at home, I had more energy to pursue my creative passions. I immersed myself in courses to become certified as an intuitive reader, reiki practitioner and meditation coach.

On the day of my final class, (literally, that exact day – there are no coincidences!) I was confronted with devastating news that completely turned my world upside down. It was a spiritual initiation, in a sense. It was like the universe saying, “Okay, we’ve taught you the basics. Now we’re throwing you in the deep end, let’s see how you swim.”

I was already well into my spiritual journey, but this forced me to go even deeper and completely immerse myself in it. It was the most profoundly challenging time of my entire life, but it was also incredibly important in my personal and professional path: it led me to gain confidence in my intuitive abilities and become passionate about helping others do the same.

I believe our society is overdue for a big awakening when it comes to intuition and spirituality as a whole. Civilizations throughout history were deeply in tune with intuitive/spiritual gifts. However, our current, mainstream culture tends to discount and discredit intuition as a source of information, writing it off as “woo woo” and relying solely on statistics/data instead. The key is, we need a balance of both. Otherwise, this mentality results in us being cut off from our intuition, which ultimately, means being cut off from our own inner power.

In my work, I hope to help people re-discover this power and open up to the amazing opportunities that life brings when you follow your intuitive guidance.

Since starting my business, one of my biggest challenges has been getting comfortable with the fact that I don’t identify with one “box” or category. I haven’t found one title to give myself that encompasses everything that I do (or aspire to do). I’m an intuitive reader, a musician, a meditation instructor, an artist, a holistic health enthusiast, a sound healer… I often feel pressure to stick to one lane, as if I can’t be or do all of these things at once. But I’m learning to accept that I’m multifaceted and am happiest when I’m engaging all of my passions.

Another challenge I’ve had with my business is learning patience! This type of business/practice can’t be built overnight, and it’s taken me several years to hone my skills, finetune my offerings, and get to a place where I feel confident both in my business and who I am. And I’m still in the process of learning and figuring it out. And that’s okay. More recently, I’ve realized that the slow pace of creating my business has been absolutely essential in allowing myself to evolve, tweak things to work better, and do more of what I love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

LA is amazing in that it truly has something for everyone, and I love that you don’t have to go very far to find gorgeous natural areas where you feel completely removed from the city.

One of my favorite things to do in LA is hiking – especially in Topanga and Malibu. It’s so beautiful, you have these amazing panoramic views of rolling hills and mountains with the ocean in the distance. I love exploring new places and finding new trails I’ve never seen before. After a hike, I usually grab lunch in Topanga at Cafe on 27 or a smoothie at Topanga Living Café – both have a great vibe and you’re still right there in the canyon.

I love Ocean Park, Santa Monica and Venice, there are so many fun restaurants/bars/shops to bounce around. You’re right by the beach and it’s all pretty walkable.

I also like exploring the east side of LA, I always take visitors to Los Feliz and Silver Lake. There’s so much amazing food, and I love checking out the flea markets and thrift stores and catching some live music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

There are so many – I feel lucky to have so many people who have inspired and supported me along my journey!

I’d like to give a shoutout to Desiree Lanz, an incredible intuitive coach and mentor who led my Intuitive Reader training and inspired me to start my business.

I also want to mention some authors/teachers that have shaped who I am today – Kasia Urbaniak, Regena Thomashauer “Mama Gena,” as well as Suze & Davidji at Unplug Meditation.

Last but not least – my incredible friends, family, and partner, who believe in me and genuinely want to see me achieve my dreams. That level of support is so important!
