Meet Diamante Murru

We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamante Murru and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diamante, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks has been a fundamental part of my career, not only in tattooing but also in my other projects, like fashion (Minimal.Ethic) and developing my biodegradable tattoo supply line (Minimal.Ethic Tattoo Supply). My entire artistic journey has been rooted in embracing the unknown and constantly pushing boundaries without any certainty about what the future might hold. I’ve taken financial risks, moved from country to country in a short span of time, and continually put myself out there to create fresh, exciting work. My goal has always been to offer clients something unexpected, even when there was a chance it wouldn’t be well-received or when I faced criticism from many directions. This approach also extended to my other ventures—creating a sustainable fashion brand and launching my biodegradable tattoo supply line. It was a significant risk, as I put everything I had built over more than a decade in tattooing on the line to introduce something new and innovative to the industry. But it’s a risk I’m proud to have taken, knowing I contributed to making a difference.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The beginning of my career wasn’t easy. I come from Sardinia, an island in Italy, and back then, making it as a female tattoo artist in a predominantly male-dominated industry was challenging. I carved out my place in the industry purely through my skills: participating in conventions, traveling, and building a portfolio so strong that I could work anywhere I wanted for as long as I wanted, attracting clients from all over the world. This allowed me to expand my connections and develop my career in a completely free and original way.
What I find important in my career is that I’ve combined different art forms within my tattoos, blending my life and passions into my work. I believe in drawing inspiration from diverse sources, not just other tattoo artists. My inspiration comes primarily from industries outside of tattooing. This approach has also influenced my other projects, such as fashion, where I bring elements developed through tattooing into those ventures.
I view tattooing as a deeply artistic process, not just about drawing designs on people’s skin. It’s about connection, experience, and an exchange of energy between me and my clients. This bond enables us to work on large-scale pieces, focusing on someone’s identity through their body. Together, we create a piece of body art, making it a true collaboration.
The lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey are definitely to never give up, to keep my ego as low as possible, to learn from every source, to always stay curious, and not to let challenges or setbacks bring me down. It may sound a bit cliché, but it’s the truth. When you believe in yourself and truly want something, no matter what it is, you’ll always find a way to make it happen.
When I was a child, I promised myself that no matter what specific form it took, I would live through art. With my creativity and artistic skills, I would make a life out of creating art, whether it was in music, photography, painting, body painting, or tattooing. I never envisioned myself doing any other kind of work that wasn’t connected to my art. I believed in this vision, and that’s exactly what I’ve done—and continue to do—every single day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I have people visiting Los Angeles, I love taking them on adventures that give a glimpse into my life here. Besides spending time in my apartment with my Sphynx cats, I always make sure to bring them to explore some of my favorite vegan spots like Cafe Gratitude, Green Table, and Pura Vita. We take a classic walk along Venice Beach, go hiking in nature, or even set off on road trips to the desert or along the coast. I also enjoy visiting flea markets together, and of course, creating art in my studio. It’s all about sharing meaningful and creative experiences.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think my determination to develop my artistic career comes from growing up watching my mom create art. She was incredibly talented, but she never had the chance to become fully independent with her art. That reality motivated me to be strong for both of us, to show the world that it is possible to be an artist, to be financially independent, and to have people love and support your work. Art has given me the opportunity to travel the world and build so many meaningful connections, which I believe is something she would have loved to experience herself.
