Meet Diana Lua | Owner, CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Lua and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At Tang & Java, our passion for high-quality, locally sourced ingredients and artisanal craftsmanship inspired us to create more than just a coffee shop—it’s a cozy, inclusive space where every sip and scoop tells a story. We wanted to offer specialty lattes and handcrafted gelato that balance bold flavors with mindful ingredients, like less sugar and dairy-free options, making our menu accessible to everyone. Our thought process was simple: bring people together over exceptional coffee and gelato, support local farms, and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where every visit feels special.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
“Tang & Java is more than just a coffee shop—it’s a bridge between cultures, a fusion of flavors, and a celebration of heritage. Through our specialty lattes and artisanal gelato, we bring the rich and diverse flavors of the Philippines to our community, honoring tradition while introducing something new and exciting. From Barako Cold Brew , Ube Pastries and latte to Banana Jackfruit, every creation tells a story of home, culture, and craftsmanship.
What sets us apart is our dedication to quality, authenticity, and mindful ingredients—no preservatives, no artificial coloring, just pure flavors inspired by our roots. I take pride in preserving the flavors of my culture and sharing them with a broader audience, creating an experience that feels both familiar and new.
Getting to where I am today professionally hasn’t been easy. Living my American Dream is still a work in progress, but my grit and passion drive me forward. I want to show my kids that hard work truly pays off. The journey has been filled with challenges—staffing issues, long hours, and the constant need to adapt—but I’ve learned that perseverance, community, and staying true to my vision make all the difference.
Tang & Java is built on love, resilience, and culture. It’s not just about coffee and gelato—it’s about connection, storytelling, and inspiring the next generation to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is a melting pot of cultures, flavors, and experiences, making it the perfect place for a week-long adventure! If I were hosting someone, I’d take them on a journey through authentic, hidden-gem food spots and iconic landmarks that truly showcase the city’s diversity.
We’d start with some of the best hole-in-the-wall eateries—grabbing an authentic bowl of ramen in Tokyo Town, indulging in handmade dumplings, xiaolom bao and Chinese food in Rosemead, and heading to San Pedro for the freshest seafood straight from the docks. Of course, no trip is complete without **exploring the beaches along the Pacific Coast Highway (101)**—stopping at Malibu, Laguna Beach, or El Matador to soak in the ocean views.
For a dose of art and culture, we’d visit The Getty Museum and LACMA, two of LA’s most famous galleries. The Broad Museum is another must-see, especially for contemporary art lovers. If they’re into history, the Japanese American National Museum and the Griffith Observatory offer incredible insights and breathtaking city views.
To wind down, we’d grab a coffee (of course, at Tang & Java! ☕) and explore the city’s vibrant nightlife—whether it’s bar-hopping in Koreatown**, catching live music at The Hollywood Bowl, or relaxing at a rooftop lounge with skyline views.
LA is an endless adventure of flavors, cultures, and unforgettable experiences—I love sharing the city’s hidden gems and must-see spots with visitors!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest inspiration has always been my kids and husband James. They are the heart behind Tang & Java, and my motivation to create high-quality treats made with fresh, natural ingredients—free from preservatives and artificial coloring. I wanted to provide them with something real, something nourishing, and that philosophy carries into everything we serve.
Beyond my family, I’m incredibly grateful for our loyal customers, our hardworking team, and the local farmers and suppliers who help bring our vision to life. Their support fuels our passion every day. A special shoutout to the West Valley Chamber of Commerce Tarzana and Woodland Hills, , The Maiden Community and the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Los Angeles (FACCGLA) for their mentorship and encouragement, and to our community for embracing what we do. Tang & Java is more than a business—it’s a labor of love, made possible by the people who believe in us.
