We had the good fortune of connecting with Diane Luby Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diane, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

“The glory of God is man fully alive.”

I wrote it down when I was 15 and have tried to live up to it since.
Feeling “fully alive” became the call of my life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am very excited about the launch of our online poetry platform Uni(verse) which brings Get Lit’s award-winning literacy and ethnic studies curricula to schools all over the world. We just won the 2023 Library of Congress Best Practice Award, and all of our curricula are “A-G” approved by the University of California. Additionally, our course Voices in Verse is 1 of 11 curriculums accepted by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) as satisfying the new Ethnic Studies Requirement and Uni(verse) is approved by LAUSD as being an on-line digital instruction provider.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take people from out of town to hike Runyon Canon with me. We can eat at Yuko Kitchen or Sake House. My husband will make them a gin and tonic with fresh limes from our garden and they can party with our neighbors. We’re homebodies, what can I say?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate the success in my life to my mom, who is the hardest-working, most creative, and ingenious person I know. She was a woman who made it in a “man’s world.” She never accepted a no, never made excuses, and just won won won. She started with Pitney Bowes as a salesperson at 40, with no college degree, and two small children. She lined up my teddy bears to practice her sales spiel. Within ten years she was Top Manager in NYC with a corner office on 1 Penn Plaza and then Vice President of the Copier Division for the entire Western Region. She tells stories about having her back go out in the middle of the snow when she was out in the field on a sales call. She had to hold onto her car to inch herself to her feet, then hold onto the rail to make her way up to the front door before making her sales call at the Boy Scouts of America where she went on to sell a meter. That’s how she built her whole career, step by step, all the way to the top. I am so lucky to have been raised by the most extraordinary person in the world. She’s also a great artist and the most loving grandma and mom in the world. I owe everything to her.
