We had the good fortune of connecting with Diego Godoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diego, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It’s the way I express myself, and I’ve been doing it since I was a kid wether it was drawing, painting or making crafts, so I always knew my life would take an artistic route. Once I merged my talent with the beauty world I knew I could have a career as a Makeup Artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think the best way to describe my art would be to say it’s versatile; that’s one of the most important features of my work, as I’ve been trained not only to perform in almost every branch of makeup artistry but also adapt to whatever comes my way.
My journey has not been the easiest, it’s taken a lot of time and work, however I can acknowledge that I am very privileged in who I am and the opportunities I’ve been given. Thanks to my effort and family support I was able to apply for a Student Visa, move to LA to attend one of the most renowned Makeup Schools and achieve my dream of becoming a Makeup Artist.
Patience has been my biggest challenge. From the beginning of my plan to move to the United States I’ve had to go through the process of searching for a school that accepts International Students, applying for a Student Visa and after that, having to wait for more than a year because of COVID. Even when I was studying the program at MUD my patience was tested every day; It would take me an hour and a half to get to school and almost 2 to get back home. But I’m still thankful for every obstacle and difficult situations I’ve gone through.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so many things to do I don’t even know where to start! When I first moved here from Mexico I lived with my great aunt and uncle in South Central, so I love Downtown LA. Shopping at ‘Los Callejones’ (a.k.a Santee Alley) going to eat at Grand Central Market is my favorite thing to do in the weekends. On an early morning during the week I would probably take them to Hollywood Blvd. Just walking around the Walk of Fame and looking at the Hollywood Sign is so much fun! there’s a great burger place called Hollywood burger, I always get a chicken sandwich, fries and a milkshake, full American Experience!
But I just love LA so much, a week is not even enough to see the best things in the city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a special mention to my family, especially my mom, my sister, my great aunt and uncle, my cousins and my tíos for always supporting me and being part of my journey as an artist; and my instructors at Makeup Designory. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
