We had the good fortune of connecting with Dina Bohannon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dina, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
My ultimate goal is to feel fulfilled in my life’s work; my work as a business owner, a mother, and a grandmother. However, overall success to me revolves heavily around my family, and they are a big contribution to my business’s achievements. The best part of what I do is getting to work alongside my greatest supporters and going through my business journey as a family. I aim to inspire those around me and set an example to my children and grandchildren that they can accomplish anything that they set their heart and minds to. If I can do that, then I have all the success I could have ever hoped for.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Synfully Sweet is supposed to represent the idea that you don’t need to have the stereotypical feminine image to be a successful bakery. The best way I can describe our look is “garagey”. I wanted our look to reflect me, it’s not fancy or girly, it’s laid back and relaxed. While our look brings our customers in, our product is what keeps them coming back. I am most proud of my perseverance, because getting to this point was never what I would refer to as “easy”. It all started when I made a Star Wars themed cake, a 3D likeness of the character R2-D2, for my son. From there Synfully Sweet was born and I started making custom cakes in my spare time. I worked on and off to make a little extra income from 2008 until 2020 when I decide to quit my job and pursue baking as a full time business. Having been baking for so long, I already had my product so we started to participate in local farmers markets and events. In the beginning, some shows were a huge successes while others weren’t, but even at those shows I discovered that I really appreciated being a part of these community events. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with customers and other vendors , growing close to many. This helped us grow our business by word of mouth. It wasn’t long before the successful shows outnumbered the others. To grow the business further, my family and I were coming up with new ideas such as our Cakeburgers and Cake and Ice Cream Push-ups which have now become fan favorites. It has been fun to see a unique and initially silly idea come to life, and become an actual product, and even neater to see how people react to them. This year we look forward to participating in shows all across the state and seeing where things take us.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Truthfully, the most fun I’ve had lately is working at pop-ups and meeting other small business owners or trying different foods. Pop-ups bring a wide variety of people and flavors to one location and make it easy to experience many things at once. If I had to entertain a visiting friend, that would be the first thing I would take them to do. Outside of pop-ups though, our favorite local restaurant is Tropical Mexico in Pomona for some good Mexican food, and Oak Tree Lanes Bar and Bowling Alley in Diamond Bar for some night time fun. If the timing is right, the first weekend of every third month is yard sale weekend in Pomona and there isn’t a time we go and don’t come home with some hidden treasure. For every other time, antique row in downtown Pomona has plenty of good finds too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank everyone in my family first and foremost for their support, but a special thanks to my husband, Tim, who sacrifices so much to be my number one supporter and never complains no matter how difficult it may be. My daughter Alyssa, who always helps me juggle multiple events in a single day. My daughter-in-law Marissa who takes care of all the scheduling and paperwork. We are extremely grateful to all the promoters who have allowed us grow our business and become what it is today. And of course thank you to all the customers who have supported our business, from those who have bought a single cupcake to those who come back every week to let us ruin your diets.
