We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Bowie Jane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ Bowie, is there something you believe many others might not?
“Most people think you should Go to University, get a degree, then pursue something safe and stable with that degree. I do not believe this at all. And I think most people in the entertainment industry don’t follow this rule. My true belief is, forget university (unless it’s required for a particular skill set of course). Instead follow whatever you are passionate about and give it your all. Really focus on it. The rest will follow”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My road has been LONG!

I started performing primarily as a singer and featured dancer in musical theater but always wanted to be in bands so I eventually started an acoustic duo and started performing 7 nights a week around town in Australia in pubs, clubs and at events. The duo work led me to band work and then meeting others I could songwrite with.

I was selected for a rock girl duo working with a top management and production team but it was very hard to find band members in Australia who were prepared to give their all to project. So I ended up going solo and writing/producing with my partner, Jason Bond (who is a legend in the songwriting and production sphere). I have learnt so much working with him! We did co-writes in Sweden, London, Nashville, Los Angeles and toured heavily in the UK before finally landing permanently in Los Angeles.

Having been a bit of a raver growing up, I gravitated towards house music and ended up teaching myself how to DJ and then doing live vocals with my Djing. I now just solely DJ and am getting heavier and heavier with my music style (leaning into techno!) and I love it!

Last year I had a top 20 Billboard club charts track “Busted” which was featured on CBS S.W.A.T. and also made the top 10 in the UK. Before that I have had multiple poppier club songs in the charts but my focus is now on my true love, electronic music.

The highlight of my career was 100 per cent opening for Paul Oakenfold. After he came on, he turned the music right down, pointed at me and made the crowd cheer me. Epic moment from such a legend in our scene.

I now have two radio shows – one called “Babes Behind the Beats” on Idobi Radio in LA where Jess Bowen and myself interview amazing females working in the music industry (both behind the scenes and on stage) and also a tech house DJ show on Jamz 99.3 FM every Friday.

The main lesson I have learnt is to start the “producing your own music” journey as soon as possible and remember there are no rules!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love going up to Mammoth but before Mammoth, I would do a few nights in LA taking them to Yamashiro for dinner, EPLP for sunset drinks on the rooftop, possibly the Rainbow Hotel or the Troubadour (if they are music lovers), if they are clubbers then Sound Nightclub to see an epic electronic artist and the Roosevelt to sit by the pool and have lunch. I would also go surfing at Malibu Surfrider beach and then afterwards have lunch on the pier at Malibu Farm. There are also some amazing restaurants in Santa Monica away from the touristy scene which I would love to take them to.

Then I would do a five day trip to Mammoth stopping in Lone Pine and watching the sunrise at Old Movie Road, then head up to beautiful Mammoth! It’s only a five hour drive and is awesome in Summer and Winter.

Then back to LA to ride bikes along the beach at Santa Monica, have a boozy lunch and then hit the restaurants in Venice.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to each of the people who have given me little breaks along my journey. Whether it’s giving me a slot on a main stage at a big festival, introducing me to the right booking agent or going out of their way to support me. It’s sometimes the people who you least expect to give you an introduction or an opportunity that can change your life.
