We had the good fortune of connecting with Dj Spynfo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dj, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
As DJ Spynfo and now the owner of Sankofa Haus balancing work and family life has been an evolving journey, especially with my son Aaron and my fiancée Bervely by my side. Initially, the demands of my career often kept me on the move, which made it challenging to maintain a stable balance. However, over time, I’ve learned the importance of prioritizing my time and setting boundaries to ensure I can dedicate quality moments to my family. The presence of Aaron and Bervely has deeply influenced how I view this balance; it’s no longer just about finding time outside of work but integrating my family into my life’s passion wherever possible. They inspire me to work smarter, not harder, and remind me that success isn’t just measured by my achievements in the music industry but also by the happiness and well-being of my loved ones. The balance is a constant negotiation, but with them, it feels like we’re on this journey together, making every moment count.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As DJ Spynfo, Mr. Matrimony, and the visionary behind Sankofa Haus, my career is a testament to the ethos of never passing over opportunities repeatedly, which is encapsulated in the acronym P.O.O.R. This principle has guided me through various ventures, from rocking the turntables at weddings to creating a communal space that celebrates heritage and connection.

What sets me apart is my relentless pursuit of growth and my dedication to community empowerment. My journey hasn’t been easy; it’s been marked by challenges and learning curves. The music and event industry is notoriously competitive, but my unique blend of passion, perseverance, and the ability to connect with people on a personal level has been the cornerstone of my success.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the establishment of Sankofa Haus. It’s not just a venue; it’s a movement that embodies the spirit of looking back to move forward. Through it, I’ve been able to foster a space for cultural exchange, education, and the celebration of our collective histories.

The key lessons I’ve learned along the way are the importance of resilience, the value of community, and the power of staying true to one’s vision. Challenges are inevitable, but it’s how you respond to them that defines your path. I’ve learned to embrace obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow.

I want the world to know that DJ Spynfo and Sankofa Haus stand for more than just entertainment; we represent a commitment to cultural enrichment, unity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. My story is one of turning passion into purpose, and I hope to inspire others to never let the fear of challenges deter them from seizing opportunities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d bring them to my favorite Oyster and Ramen spot, Rokc in Manhattan, possible stroll through one of the many parks in either the Bronx or Manhattan. Van Courtland or Central. Potentially catch a live Jazz or Rnb show in lower Manhattan at Django, Village underground or Bluenote. Im a huge live musician fan! To catch some late night culture I’d swing by Shrine in Harlem or Sultan room in Bk to catch one of their Afrobeat parties!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
, I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude and recognition to a pivotal influence in my life: the book “The Mis-Education of the Negro” by Carter G. Woodson. Reading this seminal work first in college and then revisiting it as an adult has profoundly shaped my understanding of the world, my identity, and my purpose.

In my college years, “The Mis-Education of the Negro” opened my eyes to the systemic barriers that have historically hindered African American progress and how education has been used as a tool for both oppression and liberation. It challenged me to critically examine the narratives I’d been taught and to seek out a deeper, more authentic knowledge of history and self.

Re-reading the book as an adult, amidst the responsibilities of fatherhood and my career, its message resonated on a new level. It underscored the importance of passing on this critical consciousness to my son Aaron and ensuring that the foundation of his education is rooted in truth, empowerment, and a profound understanding of his heritage.

This book not only deserves credit for its role in my personal and professional growth but also serves as a beacon for the broader community. It emphasizes the power of knowledge as a tool for liberation and the ongoing struggle for true education reform. Carter G. Woodson’s work has been a guiding light in my journey, reminding me of the value of introspection, the importance of history, and the transformative power of education.
