We had the good fortune of connecting with Dom Malin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dom, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing I think outsiders are unaware of is the hustle and the income required. To be a successful indie artist you need to be constantly on it. Self promotion in various forms: Patreon, Twitch, Live Performances, Merchandise, the list goes on. This is a saturated market, and to exist in it you need to be consistent and hardworking. There shouldn’t be days where you aren’t focused on your next steps and making strides toward your short-term goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music has always been a constant in my life. I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan, allowing me to fall in love with music at a young age. I went on to study professional musicianship in Bristol. I felt privileged to be around other musicians. They were older than me and I think this pushed my songwriting. The depth in their writing was something I chased, and with artists who inspired me at the time, I found my lyrics were older than my years.

I feel like my life experiences, being an observer, and my education is what set me apart from others. Music is so subjective, and while I want to stand out, I just want my lyrics to land and help someone through a similar experience.

I’m most proud of where I am today. I’ve worked extremely hard to get here. I started releasing songs at the start of the pandemic, with little to no following. I’ve created a nice community with supportive and loyal fans. I’ve learned so much along the way, a big thing is learning how to reach your audience and getting them to connect to you. I never want to become something I am not, so I am very honest in my approach and about my losses.

If anyone takes anything away from my music, I want it to be that they will be okay. No matter the heartbreak or tough times.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh this is fun!

It would have to start with some sort of outdoor adventure like a hike or bike ride on the trails in Cannock Chase (a nearby countryside area), or even swinging through the tree’s on zip-lines! Hit the pub for a refreshing ale before we head back to cook dinner. As it’s a week-long trip, I would take them on a road trip to a northern city, Leeds. There, we would explore the city, making sure to hit the Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen for drinks, food, and live music. My trips typically revolve around adventure, food, and live music always. You meet the most interesting people when you try to get involved with the culture around you. I find the best music is when the independent artist shares his/her soul for strangers to listen to.

Ending the trip with brunch and good coffee, and of course, music 😉

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. They encouraged me to play music from an early age. They weren’t musical themselves but they supported my ambitions.
