We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Angela Butts Chester and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Angela, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Professionally, I draw inspiration from individuals who have pursued their calling and purpose with unwavering dedication. These are the people who tackle the difficult tasks and essential work that ultimately contribute to making the world a better place. I am also inspired by the results of those I assist. Helping others move from stuck to freedom is a joy and reward in itself.

On a personal level, my faith is my constant source of motivation and inspiration. The scripture, Jeremiah 29:11 is particularly meaningful to me as it guides my path and provides hope.

Holistically, I find joy in great music, delicious food, and the wonderful company of my friends and family. To me, being inspired is about maintaining a sense of balance in all aspects of life.

As an International Women’s Speaker, I share my expertise and personal antidotes that inspire and empower women and men alike to help make the world a better place for women.

Having started in 2005 in Downtown Long Beach, I am so glad to be living my dream and doing all that I believe God has called me to do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’ll do some shopping at 2nd Street in Naples, visit The Pike, then take a break at the Lighthouse, while pointing out the Queen Mary. If there’s still some time, we can swing over to the East Village for some artistic flavor. End with dinner at one of my favorite spots like King’s Fish House, Saffron Mediterranean, or George’s Greek Cafe.

There’s no way we could leave out Hollywood! Everyone should see Hollywood and Highland, their favorite celebrity stars, Mann’s Chinese Theatre/TCL Chinese IMAX, El Capitan, and Guinness World Records Museum – especially if they have kids. Top this off with lunch at The Grove.

We’ll spend some time at the Santa Monica pier then drive down PCH to Zuma. Then end the day with dinner at Nobu; great food, good laughs, and a beautiful view.

If there’s a show to catch at Pantages, let’s add that to the list. But we can’t forget to visit the African American Museum and the Rose Garden. I’d also point out the LA Memorial Coliseum arch with the Olympic rings. And last but not least, the Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro. The view is amazing and is the perfect place to catch the sunset to end a great day or visit.

As someone who didn’t grow up in SoCAL I was once the visitor who wanted to see all the places you’re shown on TV. Someone had to show me so I gladly show my friends and family who come to visit, so they too can have great memories of their trip to Long Beach/LA.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Carver Presbyterian church family in Virginia encouraged and guided me as a child. The women were an example of what it meant to be an outstanding woman. Growing up watching Dr. Katherine Johnson, Dr. Christine Darden, Mayor Jessie Rattley, and many others was a priceless gift. As children, we didn’t realize how vital they were in their industry; they’re making history in real-time. We knew they were smart, kind, and willing to share their knowledge. As an adult, I am still reflecting on those memories. Be great at what you do, but don’t take yourself so seriously that you forget to live life, and enjoy friends and family.

My family. Raised in a middle-class civic-minded family, we were taught that we should always be willing to advocate, help, assist, and encourage those who weren’t in the same position. My paternal grandparents Leona and William Davis Butts, Esq. (the same attorney mentioned in Hidden Figures) left an amazing legacy. I’m honored to take those lessons and share them with the next generation.

There are celebrities like Cathy Hughes, Lena Horne, and Dr. Maya Angelou that also inspire me. Their lives speak of determination, vision, and unapologetic belief.

Last but not least, I also have to thank my Team; I collaborate with them on various projects that help make the wheels turn. I believe they deserve to be included here also.
