Meet Dr. Brendan Nierenberg | Doctor in Psychology, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Brendan Nierenberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Brendan, what do you attribute your success to?
I think what’s important is authenticity and genuine kindness. We live in such an advanced world today and there are so many options when it comes to directions in life, opportunities, technology, and services. But unfortunately what we are lacking greatly is a pure authentic connection to one another. I make it my personal mission to make sure everything I do is authentic from social media, podcasts, and speeches to psychotherapy. When people watch my videos or reach out for therapy services, I want them to know they are seeing and connecting with a real person who whats to understand them and help them. Secondly, we need kindness, more than ever before and I believe when we show kindness to another, especially when it comes to understanding someone, we can begin to address the real issues in someone’s life. It can be challenging to look through someone else lens of the world, but once you do, you would be surprised how easy it is to see how they navigate the world, struggle, succeed, laugh, cry, and find happiness. But that can only happen through kindness.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Doctor in Psychology, specializing in marriage and family therapy, Certified Brain injury specialist. Also, I specialize in men’s issues and eating disorders. I have been very fortunate to receive an extensive amount of training and worked with some of the best minds in these fields to help grow my own skill and learn to conduct the most effective therapy. However, one of the greatest things I have learned was the difference between being a good therapist and a great therapist was the interaction you share with your patient. When you focus less on the “book and research” perspective and focus more on the powerful humanistic experience that is embedded in the connection between people, you get truly magnificent results that leave people happier, more hopeful, and able to manage what is troubling them. I learned this from my own growth as a person and from having the privilege to witness this in my patients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is just too much to suggest for one trip in LA, more like you are going to need to take several trips! If I had to narrow it down I would have to take them to my favorite breakfast spot Claudine bakeshop in Encino, Ca, followed by shopping at Westfield in Century City, because who doesn’t love shopping?! And of course, we would have to hit the beach. My personal favorites are Santa Monica, Manhatten, and Zuma. It would be amiss if you didn’t go be a wizard at Universal. I personally can’t wait for the new Nintendo land to open up. Also, Disneyland, that’s just a no-brainer, especially because right down the street (more like 10-15 minutes on the freeway) is Portillos hotdogs, the best place for lunch in my opinion, and I’m not even a hotdog guy! However, I am a sandwich guy and there is a magnificent place called Criccas, their sandwiches are so good, I have been going there since high school! We have so many natural parks that we love to do photoshoots at, you will get some of the best photos of your life at Malibu creek state park, and that’s just one of many! lastly, If there is a convention either LA comic con, wonder con, or san Diego comic con, we are cosplaying and going! this is non-negotiable!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents and family have always supported me in everything I do. They have always shown me love, support, admiration, and an unmeasuable amount of guidance. I could never have been where I am today without their wonderful parenting. They are the ones that inspired me to find a field that was in the service of helping others and caring for them.
My Wife, Diane Nierenberg, is a constant source of love, strength, wisdom, and courage. She has always inspired me to be nothing but my absolute best self. In fact, she’s the main reason I am where I am today. I never consider myself a “risk-taker” or “taking on my own business”. But she is the one who showed me I could do it and that I am always capable of doing great things. It is only because of her unyielding love and support that I feel I am a better man and can do truly great things. She never shies away from a challenge and is truly the most courageous woman I have met, I aspire to be like her every single day because she is my hero and my perfect partner.
