Meet Dr. Crystal Lee | VP of Psychologists of Color, Inc.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Crystal Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Crystal, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of Psychologists of Color, Inc. is being able to team up and collaborate with like minded individuals from different walks of life and backgrounds.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Dr. Crystal Lee and I am the Owner of LA Concierge Psychologist and The Clinician Coach, POC Vice President, and a Board Member of Disability Community Resource Center. Some of the challenges I faced in pursuing my career in Psychology were, as mentioned earlier, not seeing as many people who looked like me throughout the journey. The subtle little things wear you down over time, like microaggressions or being in a space and realizing you are the only one who looks like you there and it caused me to question whether or not I belonged. The lessons I’ve learned along the way is that we are all fighting an uphill battle, so why not help one another through the process, which is why I decided to join POC and commit to such a shared mission.
In addition, through my boutique group practice, my team and I provide neurodiversity-affirmative care for autistic adults and adult ADHD-ers. I also specialize in adult autism assessments, focusing on identifying autism in overlooked populations, such as communities of color and gender expansive people.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think it’d be important to showcase the lesser-known, hidden gems of Los Angeles. We’d likely forgo the typical touristy spots and check out places owned by and catering to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). For example, checking out the Self Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, exploring the Leimert Park area, eating in the San Gabriel Valley, and making a pit stop at a Portos for dessert.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to Psychologists of Color, Inc. (POC, Inc.). I’m honored to be a part of this incredible organization, where the mission is to diversify the field of psychology. I wish this organization had existed when I was in graduate school and going through my training because I never saw another psychologist of color until I was nearly licensed. I never had the chance to be mentored by someone with a similar background, and it often felt lonely being one of or the only person of color in a space. That’s why I decided to get involved with POC, Inc. I want other up-and-coming psychologists of color to have a different experience than I did. I also want communities of color to be able to see themselves in the psychologist workforce.
