We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. David Frame and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve never been much good at working for other people. Especially in a creative field. I could never stand anyone else having control over my projects. So I needed a place where I could have end to end control over my art, business, and life. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so it was an easy leap to wanting to start my own company.

After getting my doctorate I felt qualified. I thought about the kind of company I wanted to start. I wanted something with my name on it. Dr. Frame is already such an evocative, cinematic name, I wanted to make sure everybody knew who was making these pictures. But I knew I wanted more than a production company. What I really cared about was trying new things. I needed a place to experiment. So Dr. Frame’s Laboratory was born.

I wanted to build an institution for artists. A place new and emerging voices, and the old masters can come and experiment with their craft. Give people a chance to get weird, crazy, and dangerous. I want my Lab to be a place to build the future of entertainment. So many hungry voices crave to push back against the established, boring norms. To give people something they can’t get anywhere else.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well, my Laboratory has always been about more than film and television production. when I saw the scope of American entertainment I knew it needed more than just another company to make original content. Indie studios and distribution companies were fighting back against the monopolistic beast the industry had become. But this did not address the problem in our culture.

I wanted a place where art was in perpetual motion. Always shifting and changing. Experimentation and innovation are a hallmark of Dr. Frame’s Laboratory. And because we are not restricted to the expectations of a normal studio, we have the freedom to experiment not just with content, but medium. Film, television, theatre, opera, games, novels, there is nothing we can’t do.

It has not been easy as we build up our slate of shorts we are already experimenting with the new medium of verticals and are prepping our first feature. Having a place like the Lab to collaborate with incredible artists and exciting new technologies is a recipe for greatness. These creative energies are building the new frontier of American entertainment and we are so excited to share it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the north of LA. I’ve lived in Burbank for a few years now. It’s so exciting to be around all the old studios with years of history. Studio tours and theme parks are a must. It is also ideal for shopping. Unlike most of LA there is ample parking and plenty of great vintage shops, brick a brac stores, and a whole world of oddities and museums to explore.

Closer to downtown is where the night comes alive. The Arts District has a vibrant collection of galleries, chic restaurants, clubs, and bars. There is something truly magical about stumbling out of a joint at 2 in the morning, and being driven home through towering high rises glittering against the night sky.

And of course the beach. Even though it’s a 40 minute drive from 6 miles away, you gotta take the opportunity to see Californias golden coast. Most people like Santa Monica, but I prefer Venice. Rich culture of surfers and beach bums. Los Angeles really has a little bit of everything.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out film editor and my girlfriend Jordan Barger, whose support I would never have come so far without.
