Meet Dr. Kyle Burton, DAOM | Acupuncture and Herbalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kyle Burton, DAOM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kyle, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Results. If I didn’t believe in our products I couldn’t continue selling them. I have to be able to sleep at night and a clean conscious is part of that. I’m in this field because I care about animals and saw how they’ve been left out of complimentary medicine. Many medications focus on symptom relief, which is a very narrow way of treating a pet (and humans). We aim to restore balance. The symptom is a branch, for optimal health you have to treat the root cause not just the symptom. Its the same in humans as is our pets. Our culture has embraced health and wellness for ourselves, it’s time we offer it to our pets. When I hear pet store owners tell us our products are the only ones that work, I know what we are doing is a success. And it helps me sleep at night.
There are several ‘herbal’ products available, but the majority of what I see is trendy herbs thrown together for a white label company. Combinations of herbs are extremely important and can help, or hinder, their health. I trust the herbal combinations that have been around for over 1,000 years, that were once also essential for a healthy livestock. Dosage is also key, and I see a lot of products with fillers and additives that make the product cheaper to produce but does not work nearly as well, if at all.
Results are definitely the most important factor in driving our business forward. Reading the reviews, talking to customers- it feeds the fire to keep pushing and working hard to keep offering all natural herbal solutions for our furbabies’ health and wellness. We’ve grown a lot in the last couple years, not just from new customers, but from existing customers and happy store owners who see the positive results.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2002 and completed externships at the LA Free Clinic and the UCLA Arthur Ashe Medical Center. I was licensed in 2006 and opened my acupuncture practice in West Hollywood. I had already been working at the Beverly Hills Hotel Spa as a massage therapist while in school which helped give my acupuncture practice a boost with existing patients.
I was in Las Vegas visiting my brother and noticed his pug was itching and howling. He said he tried everything the veterinarian recommended but nothing was helping. Having treated allergies successfully in humans, I told him I would send some herbs to him when I get home. I made sure the herbs were safe and made my first pet formula. The day my brother received them he called me to tell me the itching subsided within 20 minutes after the first dose. I was very happy to hear because I knew how bad his dog had been. After a week he called and said the skin was healing and the fur was starting to grow back. He was pretty amazed at the results. My receptionist heard and asked if he could try the herbs for his dog who also suffered from allergies. He had the same success as my brother’s dog. I started talking to patients and soon they started asking if I had anything for their pet’s anxiety and arthritis. I looked online and saw there wasn’t anything satisfactory I would recommend. I took classes in veterinarian herbs to learn more about safety and dosages and started to work on creating formulas that were based on traditional formulas but customized for cats and dogs.
Healthy Paws Herbal Labs grew from necessity. Looking back it was easy to see the need, although making it a business would require a lot more work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever a friend visits we always go on a hike. LA is great for its variety of levels of difficulties so almost anyone can enjoy a walk or hike in nature. I’m a beach person so Santa Monica and Malibu are essential. A morning surf session followed by a breakfast burrito at Great White is always a great way to start the day and give them a glimpse of LA lifestyle. If they like music then the Hollywood Bowl is great for evening entertainment. Hopefully the Dodgers are playing and we can catch a game.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My business partners Michael Habicth and Serge Del Mar. We met at Lisa Vanderpump’s Wordl Dog Day in West Hollywood. Michael is a designer and had done charity work before for animals. He and his partner, Serge, really believed in what I was trying to do and wanted to help. My acupuncture practice kept me busy so I welcomed them to help building the company. With his design skills he did a major overhaul on our brand and packaging. We went from boring brown boxes to a very colorful design with our own cartoon characters who are named after the streets in LA, each having their own unique back story. They’ve been integral to the growth and success of Healthy Paws Herbal Labs. Michael and Serge also helped create our Buy 1 Donate 1 to animal shelters. We donate a Starter Pack for new pet parents which includes our calming formula, No More Drama, and our diarrhea formula, Poo Poo Problems. Pets can take awhile to adjust, and anxiety and digestive problems are common in the first few days until they start to feel comfortable.
