We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lisa Thomson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Lisa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking and stepping out of my comfort zone is a huge reason for my success in business and in life. I believe that if we are not constantly doing things that take us out of our comfort zone we will not achieve the growth we need to have to be truly happy in life. From moving across the country with nothing but whatever belongings I could fit in my car to opening my own business, without discomfort there is no growth. A more specific example that comes to mind is how I got involved with public speaking. I am vey involved with the California Chiropractic Association and was asked to introduce a speaker at a big event. I was so nervous to just spend 2 minutes reading a speaker introduction! I was disappointed in myself for being so nervous that I immediately went to the staff member that asked me to do the introduction and requested to introduce speakers all the time. Not only did I get more comfortable introducing speakers, I then began giving lectures myself. Within 2 years of being afraid to introduce a speaker at an event, I now get paid to travel all over the country and speak at events myself. If I didn’t step out of my comfort zone often, I would never have achieved the success that I have.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner and head chiropractor at Back Body Mind Chiropractic in Santa Fe Springs, California. After practicing for a few years at other chiropractic offices, I decided to open my own office in 2013. I was very naïve as a new business owner and wrongly thought that as soon as I turned on the open sign that I would be able to quickly grow a successful business. I quickly discovered there was a lot about running a business that I did not know. There is only so much that one can learn at school, even with multiple degrees. There is no substitute for real world experience and hard work. On top of trying to grow a business I also had a 2 little kids at home. Trying to grow a new business while still being a good mom and wife was, and to be honest still is at times, very difficult. Fast forward to 2020 and I believe that the struggles I worked through the first few years of my business were an important part of developing my business to be what it is today. At Back Body Mind Chiropractic we treat all demographics, but focus on treating athletes and people involved in auto accidents. I am a lifelong sports fan and athlete so working with athletes is a passion of mine. I work with professional athletes, but working with students and amature athletes is what is most fun for me. My goal is always to help my athletes get to the next level – whatever that may be. Whether the goal is to get drafted, get a college scholarship, make the JV team or just beat their buddies on the golf course on the weekend, that is where my focus is. Since my office is located in Los Angeles, I also do treat a lot of people involved in auto accidents. I pride myself on truly caring about my patients and doing whatever I can to get them living pain free and thriving.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am originally from Upstate New York so I am still learning where the best spots in Los Angeles are myself. Some of the most fun I have had in LA involves Dodger games. I love when my husband and I can meet up with some friends and family at one of the local breweries for some food and drinks before heading over to the stadium to watch some baseball. Since I am from New York, heading to the beach always makes me feel like I am on vacation, so I would absolutely be making a trip or two to the beach. Seal Beach is the closest beach to where I am located and it is typically not too crowded, so that is where you’re most likely to find me. Going for a hike might also be on the to-do list. There are so many beautiful trails with amazing views in the greater Los Angeles area. Mt. Baldy would be my hiking recommendation for those who are up for a challenge.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would never be where I am today without the help of so many people. My parents, John and Sue Prian have always been there for me on so many levels. My husband, Sean and our 2 kids for their continued love and support. The many people who have helped with childcare, Caren, Fred and Catey Thomson and Desiree Jacobsen to name a few. Stevie Thomson for always lending an ear when my busy life gets a little stressful and I need someone to talk to. The MANY chiropractors who have I have learned from, inspired me and encouraged me to step up in life and in business – Dr. Sean Drake, Dr. Liz Hoefer, Dr. Anne Lundquist, Dr. Andrew Williams, Dr. Nathan Yeargin, Dr. Leslie Hewitt, Dr. Robert Shapiro, Dr. Julie Brown, Dr. Meg Spicer, Dr. Dave Paris, Dr. Wayne Whalen, Dr. Greg Rose, Dr. Josh Satterlee, Dr. Andy Enos, Dr. Charina Holmes, Dr. Greg Siegel, Dr. Stephen Smith, Dr. Casey Tucker, Dr. Craig Liebenson, Dr. Arash Aalem, Dr. Kent Choi, Dr. Kevin Cressey, Dr. Dennis Buckley, Dr. Brian Stenzler, Dr. Stephen L. Smith, Dr. Edgar Rodriguez, Dr. Dave Benevento, Dr. Craig Morris, Dr. Brian Prieto and many others. To the non-chiropractors who have either inspired me, taught me, supported me or put up with me – Kelly Prian, Scott Prian, Milo Bryant, Brian Bradley, Janet Alexander, Aline Thompson, DPT, Michele Desser, ATC, Tawny Chavarria, Laura El Bouchtaoui, Mike Seril, Mike, Brian and Jeff D’Amour, Sue Falsone, PT, Joe Yager, Pete Rodriguez, Fernando Lopez, and many, many more. A huge thank you to everyone who helped me along the way! I in no way would be who I am today if it wasn’t for the help/inspiration/encouragement/teachings of so many amazing people.
