Hi Dr. Mathew Cohen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After working in a wide variety of hospitals—general practice, emergency, specialty, and relief work—we had the opportunity to see what worked well in different settings and, just as importantly, what didn’t. That experience allowed us to thoughtfully design a practice that combines the best elements we observed, while intentionally avoiding the pitfalls that can create stress for both patients and clients.

Our goal has always been to provide the smoothest, most compassionate experience possible—both for the pets we treat and the families who trust us with their care. We know how much it means to hand over a beloved family member, so we built our practice around minimizing that anxiety and getting patients back to their normal routines as quickly and comfortably as possible.

At the same time, we were committed to maintaining the highest standards of medicine while also creating the space to focus on something equally critical: exceptional customer service. We wanted a practice where quality care and genuine connection go hand in hand.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Laguna Beach Veterinary Medical Center is a privately owned, family-run veterinary hospital founded by husband-and-wife duo, Dr. Mathew Cohen and Dr. Roxanne Kruger. In an industry that has become increasingly dominated by large corporate groups, we are proud to stand apart as an independent practice rooted in personal connection, community, and compassionate care.

What truly sets us apart is the heart behind our hospital. We didn’t come from wealth or inherit a business—we built this practice from the ground up through years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Before opening our doors, we spent years working long hours—sometimes seven days a week—saving every bit we could with a singular, shared goal in mind: to create a veterinary practice where we could care for pets the way we believe they deserve—with integrity, transparency, innovation, and genuine compassion.

Reaching that goal wasn’t easy. Becoming business owners brought a whole new set of challenges and a steep learning curve, from managing operations and leading a team to navigating the complex world of veterinary medicine in a post-COVID, corporate-driven landscape. But our commitment to our patients, our clients, and our long-term vision kept us focused. We leaned into our strengths, remained goal-oriented, and surrounded ourselves with a team that shares our values.

We’re most proud of the culture we’ve created at Laguna Beach Veterinary Medical Center—a place where clients feel known and heard, where pets are treated like family, and where medicine is practiced with both cutting-edge knowledge and old-fashioned compassion. We blend Western and Eastern medicine to offer integrative care, providing services that range from preventative medicine and internal medicine to emergency care, dentistry, acupuncture, laser surgery, and more.
