We had the good fortune of connecting with Drea Rawal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Drea, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Never underestimate your talent and who is watching you. Since the start of my career big names across industries knew about me before I even knew who they were. They saw my grind from a mile away and if you work hard enough — you’ll work your way into spaces you only could dream of. I wholehearted believe humility is a superpower but never put anyone in a pedestal, if you do— you may miss out on the ability to truly see yourself, your talent, your innate gifts for what they are; the fearlessness of interacting with the environment.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My health Consulting Agency Project Snatched was founded March 2012 at Howard University. At the time, Howard only allowed athlete to utilize the gym area and equipment; that’s until I brought my seemingly disruptive personality into the space pleading otherwise. I had a vision of healthy African American students on campus, not just athletes. Howard is the Mecca so I felt we have to be leaders in health in addition to other disciplines. After a strong proposal, the University created a work study job for me where I ran the gym during allotted “student hours” and I was tasked with staffing each shift if I wanted the project to work. I had no problem doing so. With the university’s blessing, I began holding group fitness classes twice a week for student and faculty in addition to assisting students regularly on campus. I’ve held every position except General Manager when it comes to the gym world. I’ve had the pleasure of starting my career at Washington’s Sports club in Georgetown as a front desk girl, then worked my way through the gym enterprises working for La Fitness, Equinox, Nike, and lastly TONEHOUSE NYC. While I enjoyed learning everything there is about running a wellness gym, I graduated from college with a psychology degree with an emphasis on health education; for the majority to my twenties I was focused on getting my credentials to do therapy. I attempted to dive into mental health in the way I desire but God had other plans for me. After being fired from my gym job in NYC for “looking for a job at work” —I was immediately contacted by a well known pop star and I was off to London for my first Tour with an artist. It all happened so fast that I know God was orchestrating every move in my life. I held SNATCHEDCAMP bootcamp classes twice a week in Central Park Harlem garnering 30-50 people each session. I truly just took everything I was doing at Howard, and took it to Harlem. I moved back in Sept 2017 and continued to build the business in California. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with amazing people, ideate and launch amazing brands, and give back to my community the way they have poured into me. I became a person invested in the community, health, and youth development. It was not easy but it was worth it. I don’t have a support system that pushed me, all I had was God and my success is a testament to his guidance and unwavering faith in my existence.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Interesting question. Respectfully— my idea of a good time is very low maintenance. It would include a nice view whether mountain or beach, a good book, tacos, and agua Fresca. I’m very introverted these days so I honestly can’t think of anything. I’ll say this, a good time/feeling good starts from the inside out.. so I urge people to focus on feeling good and see where life takes them.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to everyone who has touched my life to make it what it is today; Good, Bad, Love, and Betrayal. — it’s all brought me to God and created ineffable character.
