Meet Dtrue | Independent Hip/Hop Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dtrue and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dtrue, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because it was the only way that I could express myself. My background as a basketball player helped instill the habit of hardwork and dedication to my craft. I felt like if I could make something that other people could relate to then I’d be playing my part in this life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So i started officially making music in 2019. What sets me apart is the sound of my music, and also the image. There aren’t any asian emo hip/hop artist that sound like me. After walking away from a professional basketball career in Taiwan, I came back home and started working 3 different jobs to support my music career. I also got fired from 3 different jobs during this process. I’ve learned to just be myself and to be proud of myself and my accomplishments. I wanna make this music for people to relate to.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like DTLA vibes, restaurants all around hollywood and the LA area. Also love smoking weed and there’s a lot of it out here. Bars and Clubs all in the dtla area are definitely always fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d give a shoutout to my big bro Namebrand, he helped mentor me on the music side of things and really played a key role in me developing my craft. Shout out to my mom for always supporting me and my dreams.
