We had the good fortune of connecting with Dylan Sherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dylan, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Something that has stuck with me for years is the advice I learned from Terry Santiel, who I had the honor of meeting face-to-face. It was to write out your near and long term goals and to make a list of priorities. It might sound a little simple, but it changed my approach towards… everything really. Writing out tasks and having them organized instead of all jumbled up in my head allows me to focus and plan out my time accordingly, essential for my day-to-day productivity. It makes the future seem more doable and helps me be less anxious about whatever’s going on.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Some of my biggest challenges have come from within myself. There are times when self-doubt and anxiety have taken over, but learning how to manage it and keep it at bay has been a great life lesson. That’s why music is such an important outlet for me, it’s when I feel like I’m expressing myself to the fullest. It hasn’t been easy, especially when there’s so much on your shoulders as an independent artist these days. It has changed my approach towards making music, and regardless of pressure, I owe it to myself to carry on and keep creating.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places to show people for the first time is Daichan. It’s a family-owned Japanese soul food restaurant in Studio City, and it literally is family-operated. I was such a regular at one point the staff started calling me by my Japanese middle name, Takao, and I’ve taken sake shots with the waiter. I’d get chicken karaage or their poke bowl, apparently they’re the restaurant that started the ‘poke bowl’ as we know it here on the mainland, not the traditional style in Hawaii.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ashley Lindsay, she’s a local standup comedian, educator, and writer and absolutely deserves the shoutout. My gratitude for her support of me can’t be put into words, and I couldn’t be prouder to shout her out.
