Meet Ece Naz Kiziltan | Director & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ece Naz Kiziltan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ece Naz, why did you pursue a creative career?
I grew up in a family where dance and music was a big interest. We were always a big family with so many people surrounding us depending on these interests. Being around different types of people opened my mind and made me an observer of human actions. My family always encouraged my interest in the arts. I took dance and acting classes on weekends, but it was acting that truly captured my heart. I took part in a movie when I was just 7 years old. The experience of being on set and creating something was electrifying. Watching everything happening around me was mesmerizing and from that moment, I knew I wanted to spend my life in the world of creativity.
Acting gave me a way to explore different emotions and stories, and it felt like my safe place. The thrill of taking on different roles and collaborating with others ignited a fire in me. The excitement of being part of a team on a movie set and watching the movie after on a big screen when you are just a little kid, being able to say that ”we made it” … This feeling solidified my decision to pursue a career in film industry.
As I grew older, I realized that what truly fascinated me was the ability to create characters and breathe life into them. I found that writing and directing were avenues through which I could bring these characters to life and share their stories with the world. This realization led me down the path of becoming a filmmaker.
Creating characters and sharing their stories through filmmaking has become my way of contributing to the rich tapestry of human expression.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a female filmmaker in Turkey is not an easy path, as the industry can be highly competitive and the challenges of working within the country’s political climate can be daunting in this patriarchal society. However, despite these obstacles, I was able to find success through the support of a strong allies that believed in my vision and gave me the encouragement. I can call myself lucky, despite all the cruelness of the entertainment industry, life has always brought me good-hearted people. I was able to overcome the obstacles with all the creatives I worked with. We fed eachothers art and inspired one another while we worked together. Above all, we rise together. But there was always a feeling inside me, urging me all the time that I don’t feel I am doing enough. I wanted to come to Los Angeles and see what’s going on in the world. See the world from a different standpoint, keep moving forward to become a better version of myself, because when you create, the work you create is your reflection, it carries parts of you. I am aware that the process of learning is constant and never truly ends, this is what I am chasing for. Like the famous Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet said ”The most beautiful sea: hasn’t been crossed yet…”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are numerous captivating places, particularly beaches, that I absolutely adore visiting. When my best friends come to LA, the first place I’d take them is Malibu Beach. The serenity and endlessness it offers, especially during sunset, is truly special. LA’s beauty takes on a new form at sunset, regardless of the location actually. Next, the Griffith Observatory is a must-see, even if it’s a bit touristy. The view of the city below, illuminated by countless lights, is breathtaking and invigorating.
We’d also hit up Manhattan Beach for a taste of ‘La La Land’. For a delightful brunch experience, Beachwood Cafe would be a perfect choice. To experience a diverse range of cuisines, a visit to the Grand Central Market is essential. And for a unique touch, The Last Bookstore offers an almost surreal, cinematic atmosphere.
How can I forget Universal Studios? Everyone should go there, LA is full of once in a lifetime experiences. Sorry for my irresistible love for this city:)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family. When I mention family, it doesn’t mean just the ones that you are bonded by blood. My family and my loved ones deserve an immense amount of credit. As a Turkish woman pursuing an artistic career, I am acutely aware that not all families are as supportive and understanding when it comes to the arts. In a society we live in, my family defied norms and stood by my side. Their unwavering support, encouragement, and belief in my passion have been my bedrock. Their open-mindedness and determination to see me succeed in a field I adore is a gift beyond measure. I am eternally grateful.
Another deserved recognition is Meltem Cumbul, who has played an instrumental role in shaping my journey. From the moment we acted together in the movie ”Lovelorn” when I was 7 years old, she has been my mentor. Her talent, grace, and dedication to her craft have been a guiding light for me.
