We had the good fortune of connecting with Edi Roque and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Edi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I started playing music since I was 5 years old and that became part of who I am. Learning music as a child had a huge impact in the way I see the world around me and it also shaped my personality and character. I never decided to be a professional musician like I had a choice to do something else, music in not just a big “part of my life” rather than that, to me, music is my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently I’m divided between composing music for Film and TV and writing new material for a few upcoming albums such as my solo project and also the duo that I have with Skye Butterfield under the name Embracing Oceans. We just released our first single on Youtube called Monet and you guys should definitely check it out!! Also I’m doing remote sessions for artists/musicians. Despite the craziness happening in the world right now it’s an exciting moment to collaborate and make more music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well… the world is not the same as it used to be, so if a friend would come to visit me right now I would rather take him on a protest and have him supporting those who are fighting for change in our society rather than ignore all of what is really going on now. The reality is that people are dying out there and I just wonder how many more didn’t get caught on camera so it feels like it didn’t happen? Racism, hate, abuse of power, discrimination, corruption… this has to stop. Doesn’t matter what’s your politic view anymore, we all should agree on that because we are talking about human rights and I would say the very basic ones. So unfortunately I can’t pretend that it’s fine to “hang out” on a sidewalk in the middle of a pandemic just because, like everyone else, I also miss having a good time. I would love to take my friends on a lunch and have some good food and laugh, I would love to take my wife on a dinner because since we got married we didn’t have a chance to do that, isn’t it crazy? By the way she is exponentially more engaged with the protests and movement than I am. Now it’s the time to make a difference in how we want the world to be in the future. We need peace, we need love, more than ever.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am now if it were not for all the love and support from my wife and partner in crime Skye Butterfield and my parents Jacira and Alzeniro Roque. I am truly blessed to have them in my life.
