Meet Elizabeth Ibarra | Artist,

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Ibarra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The greatest risk and the most rewarding is being truthful at all times. It may not be popular but it is in my opinion the only path to living your purpose with a peace of mind.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For me being an artist is about exercising truth and freedom. Each new work I begin that’s what I aim for. I don’t care about the looks, for me it is about creating something unpretentious. I want the work to reveal something. I don’t have the need to tell it what to be. I want to be surprised.
I was very fortunate to have my first gallery representation with Stefan Simchowitz, the way it all happened and the miraculous set of events that had to happen for us to meet. We were timed to cross our paths at jury duty in downtown LA. Before going to jury duty I had seen a video on YouTube about him and that’s how I knew of his existence in ‘the art world’. The internet is a great tool.
I am an outsider, I didn’t go to art school. I don’t come from an artistic background. To me, it makes sense that that’s how I got into the art world. I have never believed there’s only one way for things to be done and I have always asked for miracles, for the impossible.
I want to remain open and transparent. And Stefan Simchowitz is one of the few who also has those qualities. He embraces the outsiders. It makes sense that GOD put us together that day. Meeting people in the world that you want to be part of is really important, so my advice is to go to shows that interest you. Supporting galleries is a good way to meet new people and keep the art world turning.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Besides the beautiful sky and weather of LA, I love the food. There’s so many great restaurants. New ones coming out all the time. I’m Mexican and I have to have tacos at least once a week. My two favorite ones right now are, Simon Taco Truck and Villas tacos, for pizza, Pizzeria Mozza, and for the best pastries, Friends & Family Bakery. After eating go to galleries there’s so many. I like the Getty. I’m really not the best at recommending people what to do. Haha.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Since the beginning, I have been blessed by having the right people, the few, who have helped me continue on my own path. To them, I will forever be grateful. Thanks to Katrina for recommending me for this interview. And thanks to the two galleries that represent me: Simchowitz gallery, and Tatjana Pieters gallery.
