We had the good fortune of connecting with ELSA MELERO and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ELSA, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Indispensable question. Work-life balance can be a challenging and ongoing process. It can definitely be difficult to find the right balance between the demands of work and the desire to maintain healthy relationships, engage in hobbies and interests, and take care of oneself. Also balance might change over time as life circumstances and priorities shift. It’s important to set boundaries, communicate, prioritize self-care, and be flexible when circumstances change. It’s also important to recognize that achieving balance is not always be possible!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would say shooting on film adds a unique and timeless quality to my work. I like to preserve the artistry and craftsmanship of analog photography in a digital age. Analog allows me to establish to create a comfortable and collaborative environment with my subjects, which I believe translates into more compelling and captivating images. Using film also allows me to have a meticulous approach to every aspect of my work.
I would say one of the most important lessons working as an artist gives you is to understand the importance of empathy, active listening, and creating a collaborative environment to bring out the best in your subjects and in your team.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start the trip with a visit to Griffith Observatory for panoramic views of the city. Take a hike in Griffith Park and then head to The Original Farmers Market for lunch. Venice Beach Boardwalk, bike along the beach, watch street performers, and enjoy dinner at my favorite restaurant Cobi’s. I wouldn’t miss The Broad. I would also visit Silverlake and it’s local coffee shops, it’s unique boutiques. And the best plan for me is spending the day at the beach in Malibu swim, surf and eat at Cholada’s after watching the sunset.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Many other past and present artists have guided and inspired me unconsciously and consciously. All the art that surrounds me has helped shape my vision and my work, whether it’s reading a book, watch a movie or going to the Opera. But I also want to mention how my close friends and family unwavering support and patience, and belief in my talent has definitely gave me the confidence and motivation to continue pursuing my passion. And of course I want to recognize the collaborative process that exists when I work with models, stylists, makeup artists, and other creative professionals, each piece of the puzzle is contributing to bringing the vision to life.
