We had the good fortune of connecting with Elyse Rusaw PCD(DONA) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elyse, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One often overlooked aspect of the doula industry is the diverse landscape of training and certification paths. Unlike some professions, there isn’t a singular regulating or certifying entity for doulas. It’s a spectrum where doulas may be self-trained, trained without certification, or certified through various certifying bodies. Each individual doula brings their own experience, knowledge, and education to the table. In addition to my own experience and knowledge, I hold a certification as a postpartum doula from DONA International, a testament to my commitment to meeting recognized industry standards.

What sets South County Doula apart is not just the certification but a dedication to education and quality information. I believe in staying at the forefront of evolving practices and research. Continual learning is ingrained in my approach, with a commitment to expanding my knowledge through new trainings. This ensures that the families I serve receive the most comprehensive and up-to-date care, reflecting my high standards for excellence in the postpartum experience.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I am a DONA certified postpartum doula and certified newborn care specialist, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the families I serve. As a mother to three children aged 7, 6, and 2, my journey into postpartum work began during my time with Dr. Kenneth James at Orange Coast Women’s Medical Group. I discovered my passion for caring for mothers, babies, and families in the postpartum field during this transformative period.

I have a profound commitment to mental health and lactation, providing holistic care to support families comprehensively. Trained in Ayurvedic postpartum care, I am dedicated to lifelong learning, always seeking to educate myself with the best knowledge and deliver the highest quality care to my families. Recognizing the vulnerability of the postpartum period, I ensure clients feel comfortable, fostering an environment where they perceive me as a part of their family.

———What are you most proud of or excited about in your business?
I take immense pride in my DONA certification, a recognition of the hard work, knowledge, and education invested in my journey. The incredible testimonials from clients and the lasting relationships I maintain with them even beyond the early postpartum days bring me great excitement. Additionally, launching virtual Newborn Care and Breastfeeding 101 classes signifies a new chapter in my business, allowing me to share knowledge nationwide.

———How did you get to where you are today business-wise?
The establishment of my postpartum doula business involved solo efforts, handling all administrative groundwork independently. From building my website to writing blogs, every aspect reflects the authenticity and dedication I pour into my work. This business, a labor of love, is unfolding in a more beautiful way than I ever imagined.

———Was it easy to get to where you are today, or did you encounter challenges? If so, how did you overcome them?
My journey has been defined by hard work, patience, and perseverance. Striving to learn more and consistently deliver exceptional service to my clients, I’ve overcome challenges through a commitment to personal and professional growth.

———What lessons have you learned along the way in building your business?
The journey has instilled a greater sense of confidence and self-belief. Witnessing the realization of owning my own business, a dream I always harbored, has been a testament to the power of determination and self-confidence.

———What do you want the world to know about you, your brand, and your story?
I want the world to recognize my brand as a provider of concierge, holistic postpartum care services, both virtually and in person. Whether teaching in-person or virtual Newborn Care and Breastfeeding 101 classes, my goal is to treat each supported family as my own, with their best interests at heart. The upcoming services I am launching soon will further enrich the support I offer, and I aspire for each family to become an extended part of my own.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d start our week-long adventure by taking them to the heart of Mission Viejo – a cozy spot called “Golden Lantern Coffee Roasters.” Run by the wonderful Matt Rosenblum, this independent coffee roaster is where I often find inspiration for my business. The aromatic coffee, paired with Matt’s friendly chats, sets the perfect tone for our creative journey.

For those seeking relaxation, a massage by Kelly at Healing Wahine in Newport Beach is a must. Kelly’s nurturing care creates an oasis of calm, leaving our minds refreshed and bodies rejuvenated.

A leisurely walk along the marina in Dana Point is on our itinerary, especially during the summer. Picture this – strolling with an ice cream cone in hand, enjoying the scenic beauty. To add a touch of wildlife adventure, we’d head to the Rancho Las Lomas Wildlife Foundation in Silverado Canyon. Post-exploration, Silverado Cafe beckons with its homestyle comfort food.

For a quintessential summer day, we’d soak up the sun in Huntington Beach, complete with a family bonfire pit session and marshmallow roasting. And if our friends decide to extend their stay, Kernville is our hidden gem. A scenic 2-hour drive from Los Angeles leads to this charming town with a fascinating history (yes, they moved the entire town once!). Big Blue Bear Cafe in Kernville offers a taste of small-town charm with a cup of coffee, while dinner at Ewing’s, overlooking the Kern River, is an experience not to be missed. Each stop is a blend of local charm and personal favorites, creating a week-long adventure filled with delightful moments.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to DONA International, especially my exceptional trainer Ann Grauer. Their comprehensive training and wealth of resources have been the bedrock of my journey as a postpartum doula, shaping my approach and ensuring I provide the highest quality of care.

A special thank you goes to Dr. Kenneth James of Orange Coast Women’s Medical Group, who played a pivotal role in sparking my passion for supporting mothers and families during pregnancy and postpartum. My time working in his office was the beginning of my journey in the birth world, and he continues to be a mentor and an incredibly supportive figure both personally and professionally.

And, of course, a big shoutout to my husband and family, my unwavering cheerleaders. Their support has been the driving force behind my success, and I’m deeply grateful for their encouragement and belief in my dedication to helping families during the transformative postpartum period.
