We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Entz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ever since I was very little I knew creating worlds, characters, and storylines was something I needed to do for as long as I could. Of course, being a kid in the early 2000s I had really no idea of what creative jobs were out there available to me. In fact,
I didn’t know you could do creative things for a living. Growing up with a lot of siblings, we all had our opinions and wild imaginations. When I got my first laptop with things like iMovie and Photoshop I knew then the fun couldn’t stop here. As I’ve grown up over the years, I think what has always been at the forefront of my mind is, would little me think this is cool? Would she like this character I’ve made with all its dramatic lighting and makeup? To answer the question, my thought process has always been how can I keep playing? How do I keep the childlike spirit in me alive?

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I think of all the things I’ve created, all the characters I’ve conjured up from something I heard or a phrase I read somewhere, it is such a scene. As if these people have been existing here before me and I just got here to document it. My ability to world build and completely immerse myself into a fictional character is something I take great pride in. There is a lot more I’d like to do professionally, and although it can be daunting and overwhelming to think big picture, I’m excited to not be there yet, but maybe I should never be “there”. Perhaps the goal should be to keep leveling up, to never let my feet touch the ground. A big lesson I’ve learned along the way is to always say YES to any oppurtuinity offered to you. No matter how big or small a project can be, meeting like-minded people who revel in the same creative hot environment is such a special connection to have. I can only hope my photos give you the ability to dream up a life, a narrative you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. A chance to escape reality for a second.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is an exciting place to show off. There’s so much musical history everywhere you go and unfortunately for my friends who visit, I don’t let them forget it. My favorite pastime is driving through the Hollywood Hills, passing grand houses you just know someone you adore has stepped foot in. Beachwood Canyon, the Sunset Strip and Laurel Canyon is where I take my friends. Mels’ Diner and Beachwood Cafe are both places I tend to visit often. We go to the Observatory in the day to get a good look of the city and by night we’re dancing to a live band in some bar off Hollywood Blvd. There’s flea markets on the weekends in Silverlake and Los Feliz full of colorful clothes and original art pieces waiting to be bought. We must say hello to the Troubadour and if we’re lucky catch a show. The possibilities and entertainment in LA is endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Many people come to mind when I think of who’s inspired and believed in me. First of all, my Dad, who provided me with everything I needed to bring all my ideas to life and for forgiving me when I’d steal his camera before I had my own. I don’t think I’d care about the things I do had it not been for the way he’s raised me. All my beautiful friends with all their girl noise and enthusiasm to create. There is nothing more powerful to me than seeing an idea we’ve come up with standing in front of me in all its sparkling splendor. I think of all the people who never doubted me from the start, which leads me to thank my good and gorgeous friends band, Pretty. The first people to see any kind of value in my work and my ideas. It’s a chaos and collaboration I feel lucky to be a part of every time. All the helping hands offered to hold a light, a Polaroid, or reflector just to make my job the smoothest it can be, thank you, I won’t ever forget your kindness. Lastly, Patti Smith, my solace escape, in times when I need guidance and a reminder of what it’s all for, I turn to her and her words. She fills my heart with hope and direction.
