We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Lara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my Makeup and Hair business has been networking with others. Networking with others in my industry has opened many doors for me and I am grateful each day for that, I have learned the more you network the more jobs open up for you.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a LA based makeup artist and hairstylist, that started my career right after high school. I went to a makeup academy in North Hollywood, and after I graduated I started doing collabs to get my name out there more. For over a year I was doing collabs and working a part time job, it was challenging at first starting my career because I was not getting a lot of paying jobs as I thought I would, but I knew it all part of the process. Being a freelance makeup artist and hairstylist isn’t the easiest, but it is duable. Once I started doing collabs and networking with people I started to notice that I was getting more paid jobs, to the point were I was booked enough with paid jobs to quit my part time job. I am now a full time freelance makeup artist and hairstylist, which is exciting and new! I am still learning to this day on how to grow more and keep going even when some weeks are slow. But as I grow as a person and continue this journey I know that I will succeed my dream career of being a makeup artist and hairstylist.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I recently moved to LA so I don’t know a lot of places yet, but if my best friend were to come visit I would take them on a hike, then take them to my favorite coffee place in Southgate, called Coffee and Chisme, and then take them to a view to watch the sunset. I want to learn about more places and definitely explore more around LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out the these particular people because they have helped me get jobs, give advice about the industry, and support me through my journey. First I want to shout out my family and my boyfriend that have been there with me from the start of my career cheering me on as I take such a risk of starting my business right after high school. Secondly I like to thank the wonderful people that I have met through jobs they have been very sweet, helping me learn the ways to get jobs and clients, specifically Vincent. He has helped me out with meeting people and getting many cool opportunities, not only has he helped me out on the business side, he also has given me good life advice as well. I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful to have such a good support system!
