We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own thing? It really came from this unique spot I found myself in. I had the opportunity to help run an online community of nurses, and we kept hearing the same request. Nurses everywhere were desperate to get the real scoop on hospitals, which was nearly impossible without an insider’s perspective.
After speaking with another friend of mine who also ran a large community of nurses, we discovered she, too, was hearing the same things from nurses. We recognized a pressing need for a platform offering deep insights into hospital cultures and thought, “If we don’t do this, who will?” That marked the beginning of Bluem. I’m incredibly thankful to co-found Bluem with her. Together, We set out to build this product, always checking in with nurses to guide us. From the start, our north star has been clear: to empower nurses. We can’t wait to see the positive transformation Bluem brings to the nursing community.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m so excited about the potential Bluem has to revolutionize nursing. Making a tangible difference is what drives me. My path to this point has been anything but straightforward, marked by significant challenges and tough lessons. After facing some tough situations at a previous job, which left me feeling both betrayed and struggling with my mental health, I was determined not to let it stop me from creating what I knew nurses desperately needed. I’m proud that I chose to prioritize my mental health, sought out support, and for being determined to find another way to accomplish building something I really believed would empower nurses.
The journey taught me the crucial lesson of the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and always trusting your instincts. Bluem is born out of a genuine commitment to the nursing community, guided at every step by our mission. We’re here because we care deeply about nurses and want to make a significant, positive impact in their lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh fun! Well, I just did this with a friend recently!
I like to start at Fredrick Wiseman’s House- He was an art collector and has an amazing tour of his home gallery with some of my favorite artists (Rothko, Haring, Picasso, Still, and Kandinsky to name a few). And it’s free- But bring $40 cash if you want to purchase the book of all the art. But you need to book in advance- so keep that in mind! Then we go grab a bite to eat, like arepas at Cafe Bolivar, or brunch at Met her at a bar. I like to chill at the beach for a bit, and then maybe watch the sunset. I inevitably will find time to grab Leo’s tacos or Sonora Town Lorenza’s and see where the night takes us!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Nursing Community- I would not be where I am if I did not have the support of nurses around the country. I am beyond grateful for them being willing to share their stories with me- and of course my Co-founder- We’ll call her Snarky – I could not do this without her!
I also want to mention the other members of the Bluem team- we are a small team of 5- and everyone plays a pivotal role ( more like 5 pivotal roles)!
