Meet Emily O’Brien | Writer & Magazine Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily O’Brien and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work-life balance has shifted from something I chased to something I actively nurture. Some days, work takes center stage; other days, it’s about recharging—hiking in the woods, volunteering with CreativeMornings or spending time on my back deck with a good book. I think of balance in terms of variety and weight. After hours at my laptop, I know it’s time to move, breathe and reconnect. For me, balance isn’t perfect equilibrium (that’s impossible!); it’s about awareness, noticing when life tips too far in one direction and gently recalibrating.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a writer and magazine editor passionate about highlighting people doing great work and raising awareness of topics and places that truly resonate with readers. I currently serve as the senior editor at SUCCESS magazine, where I oversee both print and digital content, and I also freelance for a variety of outlets. In addition, I’m the author of Things I Heard While Dating, a collection of 100+ real-life lines from dates, marriages and failed pickup attempts, paired with backstories and a touch of dry dating advice. At the heart of all my work is a focus on human connection. I try to bring authenticity and relatability to every story I tell.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Raleigh has such a vibrant energy, with scenic spots perfect for a morning coffee or a leisurely lunch. The city hums with creativity and great music and is dotted with craft breweries and boutique shops, making it easy to explore and soak in the local vibe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my daughter, Nicola. She’s a 16-year-old emerging photographer with such a unique eye—watching her view the world through her own creative lens constantly inspires me.
