We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Phelps and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk is necessary in being successful. I don’t believe you build a successful business or live a memorable life by playing it safe. I constantly take risks with my business, but with the understanding that sometimes ideas don’t work and you can’t linger; you have to keep it moving. I really believe success comes from multiple working parts at the same time, and letting go of the things (and sometimes people & places) that don’t serve you.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own and operate Artmingo LLC which is an event production company. We produce mostly weddings, however we’re expanding into venues and food & beverage this year.

I don’t think I would say any part of what I / we do is easy. To bring an idea from conversation to real life experience is unparalleled. It is extremely high stress and extremely high demand, but at the same time so fulfilling!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to keep moving when you have a failure. I have taken a lot of chances, and some of them have been very successful, others not so much. The key to continuous success, though, is to just brush yourself and keep going forward. Things that are meant for you won’t surpass you. When you dwell, you invite negativity into your sacred space. I’ve incorporated this thought process a lot into my business planning, my personal life, and work ethic.

My other piece of advice and a lesson I’ve learned is you have to be your number 1 cheerleader. You have to believe you are the absolute best at what you do – BUT – with humility. If you can walk the line between believing you are amazing but also not have an ego about it – you WILL be successful!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh I love this!

I’d split the trip between Pasadena, LA & Santa Monica. I’d have us stay at the Langham, Petit Hermitage, & Santa Monica Proper.

For meals, we’d be eating at Parkway Grill & Sugar Fish in Pasadena, Petit Trois (LA), Colapasta in Santa Monica, Nobu Malibu, and OF COURSE In N Out and Shake Shack. I would definitely pressure them into deciding which is better.

For activities, we’d be going to the Norton Simon Museum, probably book a candlelight concert through Fever, the Getty Villa, the beach OF COURSE, & The Grove. I’d take them to La Descaraga in Hollywood, The Roger Room & Bar Lis for any of the nights we want to do dancing & drinks! I love being spontaneous so if there were any random artists to see a show of, I’d totally book us tickets! And if we have any free time…DISNEYLAND!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My close circle. I have a few extremely supportive friends who have offered their knowledge, love, time and support throughout my career. I also have to always give my love and dues to my parents as well, they are so supportive and really help me, especially with my son, when I need it. Being a single parent and running this kind of high-stress high demand people really takes a village, and I am so freakin’ grateful for mine!
