We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Scher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
50%of my job is my disposition. It’s not my talent. I get repeat customers because they feel comfortable with me. Most clients tell me they hate getting their picture taken and when our session is over they tell me how at ease they felt. That always makes me happy. .

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My passion is photographing beach life. Capturing ocean waves and everything surrounding the sea world is what excites me most. I have exhibited and sold my work in many restaurants and galleries.

I also shoot portraits, events, performance and real estate. I’ve been shooting for Malibu Times Magazine and newspaper since 2009. Iwhen I started I only worked for the newspaper. It was my dream to create images for the magazine. I honestly don’t know how it happened but the editors decided to switch me and from then on, I’ve mainly done magazine work for them. It’s given me credibility in my field along with exposure to many fascinating people I would t ever have met. The job taught me to master lifestyle photography. has become my favorite type of portraiture.

I’m always flattered when people tell me I have a signature style they recognize without knowing it’s me, as well as loving my portraits when they don’t know the individuals i’ve captured. My brother taught me that signifies a great photo.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t live in a city. I live in Malibu. I love to take people to the tip of Point Dume and walk them on the little hike that circles one of the most beautiful places I’ve enter seen in the world. People always thank me and tell me it’s incredible experience. Often it makes them want to live in Malibu. The Sunset Restaurant is very nearby, right on the beach below. I tell everyone to try their lobster tacos which are phenomenal and one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mentor has been my brother Adam Scher. He is the first person who inspired me to be a photographer. Ever since I took on this endeavor, he has taken the time to guide me in what kind of gear to use as well as how to be the best I can be in my field. On several occasions he has offered hours to teach me all there is to know about composition and what makes a photo a successful image. I am ver blessed to have him in my life, showing me the way.
