We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Schuhmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
Leaving a 12+ career as a drawing and contemporary theories Professor to open an intuitive practice, where I teach about spirituality, self expression, and even offer past life readings. People have the impression that psychics, mediums, and readers are largely hucksters and not honest folks who have refined their intuitive gifts. It took a lot of guts to start exploring the possible truths in things like past lives and spirit communication both with myself and eventually with clients. When I started drawing what I saw during meditations for clients it was like a whole level of healing and validating opened. I’ve had clients take drawings and the information that has come through during readings and use them to find past loved ones, confirm names and locations with census records, or as clues for identifying which times and communities they’ve had a soul history with. I still make and teach art and I continue to support clients with expression, identity, and alignment: I just get to do it now with an openness to greater mysteries and the wisdoms they contain.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the creatrix of Gettin’Intuit, a spirituality and intuitive academy that blends research with mystical practices and healing modalities like reiki, yoga, meditation, and art making. I also offer past life and tarot readings alongside intuitive coaching and support the community at large by hosting the podcast Sacred Adventure Begin.

Finding the right spirituality teachers, healers, and communities for me was the biggest hurdle in getting started. It was also what ultimately inspired me to open my own practice. I started my professional career as a professor- spending over 12 years teaching in academia as an art and contemporary theories (art history) professor. I was struggling with anxiety and not even aware that some of the ‘extra’ things I experienced were related to my spiritual gifts until I experienced a spinal injury. So much of what’s readily available in terms of spiritual and healing practices can be disempowering, bypassing, or rooted in systems of oppression and alienate folks (like me) who are skeptical but curious and have a strong need for that support in their lives.

What makes GettinIntuit different is that it provides the permission to ask deeper questions, the encouragement to challenge belief systems, the opportunity to test out concepts in community, and features peer reviewed research alongside poetry.

After years of stress, chronic injury, and feeling alone in my spirituality, I am now pain free, facilitating an amazing community, joyfully married with fur babies, serving clients, laughing at my mistakes, creating art, meditating, and dancing. I think of GettinIntuit as an invitation for others to join me in discovering non-dogmatic spiritual practices, reveling in the bold adventure that is life, exploring consciousness, connecting with others, honing intuitive gifts, developing a working cosmology, and creating magic for oneself and one’s community.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Given my history as an art professor- you know I’m going to take them to all the amazing museums and galleries in LA. If they particularly love environments and textures we’ll head to 333 Gallery and also go shopping for fabrics!

My top food picks are Daikokuya Little Tokyo, Mole De Los Reyes, anywhere on Olivera street.

If my guest is also a fan of things spooky things (like past lives)- I’d recommend a trip to the Museum of Death, followed by something light and fun- like heading to a beach and spending the rest of the day enjoying the life we are living now.

We’d definitely catch a Yoga class or breathwork session with Bianca Bloomfield, Karishma Donde, or a sound healing bath in one of the parks or beaches.

For my guests who enjoy movement and up-beat environments I would also take them to a beginner swing dance class at Atomic Ballroom or we could go to one of the Friday night swing dances together after getting dinner nearby in OC.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Breathwork and meditation have been huge factors in my healing. I credit them with releasing the doubt, fear, and self judgement I was holding around creating my own practice, community, and academy. I ADORE Samara Kasai who runs “Moody and Magnetic- Trauma Informed Manifestation School”, Karishma Donde who is a gifted healing practitioner and channel, and Bianca Bloomfield whose yoga and Sunday night breathwork classes keep me going.

I also feel like an academic shout out is necessary. I resisted exploring spirituality for so long because the field appeared full of appropriation, lack of cited and peer reviewed sources, and claims bordering on the miraculous-so-they-must-be-a-scam. I’ve been following the research of Havard’s Dr. Diane Powell whose triple blind studies of psychics and mediums validated mediumship as a field for me. Her book “The ESP Enigma: A Scientific Case for Psychic Phenomena” is a great place to start. Additionally, “Where is My Mind Podcast” by Mark Gober is also a useful collection of interviews and abstracts featuring research in consciousness. As a former academic- I find that my mind can get in the way of self-expression and spiritual connection- so learning is a way to give reassurance and to make sure I’m not falling into a cult or unvalidated conspiracy theory.
