We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Palova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Independence and freedom to create using my voice and experience. I am privileged to have three major experiences: communist, capitalist, and catholic. The catharsis of the above has provided me with a broad base of ideas, and how to execute them using different philosophies and methods.
I believe that only as individuals we are responsible for our success; having said that, we have to use common resources wisely to benefit all. The intent behind our actions must be positive.
I consider writing and my authorship a business with a target audience and effective marketing strategies. Any business or venture requires taking risks as well as leadership. I am comfortable with both roles.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an author, journalist, screenwriter, and podcast host/producer based in Lowell, MI.

What sets me apart?

I was born in former socialist Czechoslovakia, and the journey to escape socialism continues to inspire all my work. My Greenwich Meridian Memoir captures our immigration saga spanning two generations on the backdrop of two major historical events: the 1968 Prague Spring and the 1989 Velvet Revolution.

What am I proud of?

I am proud of my journalism career which dovetails with my authorship. I was naturalized at the Gerald R. For Museum in Grand Rapids in 1999. The Associated Press ran a big story about the naturalization. At the time I received hundreds of congratulatory calls. I consider that time as a catalyst to all my creative work.

How did I get to where I am at professionally?

I took many jobs, including working as a women’s clerk at a major Midwest retailer. That job later inspired my first short stories in the Shifting Sands collections. I was putting one foot in front of the other to get where I am, building my name recognition.

Was it easy? How did I overcome the challenges?

As you can imagine, there was nothing easy in becoming a recognized author. I persevered because I didn’t want my short stories to get lost in piles and shelves collecting dust. The same goes for our immigration story; history tends to repeat itself. I don’t want that to happen to other people, just because it happened to me. Although the memoir is not a political book by any means, it explains certain dynamics of necessary changes in a society.

What are the lessons that I have learned along the way?

Never give up. Take everything one day at a time. When you feel like giving up, look at the things you’ve already accomplished to get you where you are. How do you know how far or close you are to your goal? Keep asking those questions. Reward yourself along the way and help others achieve their goals.

What do I want the world to know about me, and my books?

I write for entertainment, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any underlying messages in my work. When I research a story, I dig deep and follow it through. I am amazed at today’s reporting without attributions or sources. You don’t just scrape the surface. My writing is also very visual in a very visual world. I am proud of that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take her to our excellent local eateries, the newly opened Easy Street restaurant, LowellArts Gallery, and to see a great comedic performance at The Old Theater in downtown Lowell.

Also our Riverwalk Festival in July rocks and brings bands and fun to the river bank.

I would encourage my friend to attend one of our Moravian Sons Distillery spirit tastings in West Michigan. They present some of the essence of the old country transferred over the ocean for others to enjoy. We take pride in our family business.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Festival organizers and their hard work to make each event a success.
