We had the good fortune of connecting with EnJunaya Canton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi EnJunaya, what principle do you value most?
This is really a hard question to answer as their are many values and principles that matter most to me. Including Health and Wellness, Personal Development, Family and Social Connections, Community Empowerment and Entrepreneurship.
Since I have to pick only one I will say personal development, as it fosters increased self awareness, improved skills and knowledge, self confidence, stronger relationships and adaptability.
What should our readers know about your business?
My entrepreneurial spark ignited when I faced health challenges and discovered a link between toxic chemicals in beauty products and negative health impacts, particularly for Black women. Inspired by my great-aunt, a successful entrepreneur in the 70s, and Madam CJ Walker, the pioneer of Black hair care products, I knew I could create a better solution. Leveraging my background in Chemistry, I formulated BioActive, Vegan, Organic, and Non-Toxic skin and hair care solutions – “Skin Food” as I call it.
Building Zuhuri Beauty wasn’t easy. When I began there weren’t a lot of opportunities to network with other successful brands or manufacturers willing to share their stories or offer mentorship. In a lot of ways, I had to learn on my own and seek out the best help for myself at the different stages of my personal and business development while caring for my mother. Like most BIPOC entrepreneurs, securing funding and navigating policies, procedures, compliance issues and production hurdles presented almost traumatic challenges, but my passion for clean beauty and empowering others kept me going. Today, Zuhuri Beauty is not just a successful clean beauty brand, we’ve also helped over a dozen BIPOC Clean Beauty brands launch their dreams, provided business coaching, formulation and manufacturing services, and other assistance that has fostered economic empowerment within our communities and helped create generational wealth.
My story is a testament to overcoming challenges, staying true to my core values, and using success to uplift others. I am a trusted voice and a champion for clean beauty and economic empowerment within the BIPOC community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Truthfully I do not get out much, but if a friend was visiting the city there are several places we would have to go. We would definitely eat and have fresh juices at Simply Wholesome, Erin McKenna Bakery, and Stuff I Eat (Chef Babette Davis). We would go to, Dockweiler Beach, Manhattan Pier, Hollywood, as well as a local coffee shop.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my family, friends and the S.E.L.F. program by PCR SBDC who have been a true blessing to me during this time in my life.
