Meet Eric Devontae Russell | Entertainer, Host, Podcaster, Journalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Devontae Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric Devontae, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
“The World According To Eric” is my way of opening the doors of the rooms that I’ve always wanted to be in. Breaking into the entertainment industry is tough. Whether you’re a host, journalist, dancer, singer, etc. it’s tough to navigate. So, I created my own space to not only show my talents, and brand myself but a space where I can do it being authentically me; while hopefully inspiring others to do the same.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is one of my greatest expressions of love. It’s a gift from the divine, and it’s my gift to y’all. I am an ENTERTAINER. I Podcast, Host, Write, Dance, Rap, Interview, and a few other things, and I do them all well. (This may sound like bragging, but it’s self love, and I encourage all of you to practice it) The thing that sets me and my art apart from the others, is the fact that I’m me. No one can do Eric Devontae Russell the way I do it. I’m a vibe and my art radiates that. It gives very much, ohhh he’s fun, I want to be his friend, lol. I am most proud of my evolution on this journey. I am constantly stressing about my future. The how’s, the when’s, and I seldom give myself time to appreciate what I’ve accomplished. But, in hindsight, I’ve worked so hard and I’ve created so many opportunities for myself by just being consistent, and doing what feels right in my heart. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today and I’m grateful for that. Those experiences have shaped me. Regarding overcoming challenges, it wasn’t a solo project. I’ve leaned on family, friends, and my faith. Some obstacles are strictly individual, and in those situations, I allow myself to feel all the feels. I cry when I need to; I take time to myself, and I practice having grace with myself. Life can be challenging. There are so many things happening in the world, we each deserve grace and we owe that to ourselves. Some of the lessons that I’ve learned along the way are, you attract more flies with honey than vinegar. Be pleasant and respectful on your journey. You’ll open so many doors like that. I’ve learned to go with the universe and divine timing. It may sound cliche, but TRUST THE PROCESS, it’s molding you. The most important lesson that I’ve been reminded of is, be yourself. Authenticity sells. Besides, everyone else is already taken. Also, support your friends! That means more than you know to a creative.
I want the world to know that I am human like everyone else. I don’t always get it right, but I come with good intentions. I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit. *Erykah Badu Voice* But, I welcome you to take a look into The World According To Eric. There’s something for everybody. Come as you are. Let’s have some fun. Life is a party, so let’s have a good time.If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hmmmmmm, Where would I take my best friends if they were visiting? Well, we have to go to WEHO. Home of the hoes lmfaooo, jk. But, if you’re friends with me, chances are, you know how to cut up. And a party ain’t a party till it’s ran all through. As far as food goes, I loveeee soul food, so we have to hit up a soul food restaurant. Of course, we have to go to a rooftop function in downtown LA. I would take them to Runyon canyon (depending on which friend is visiting. Some of my friends do not play like that lol). I would want to take them to a lounge spot with live music. I’m still learning all the spots for myself, but I’m into spontaneity, so we’ll figure it out when they get here. Either way, it’s going to be a great time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are SO MANY people that deserve a shoutout. I’m blessed to have an amazing tribe of people in my life. But I just want to say thank you to my Mommy-O, My sister Tesha, and my mom, along with the rest of my amazing family. I can’t imagine getting this far in my journey without your love and support. Shoutouts to my LA tribe. Y’all have made my LA journey so special. Thank you for always pouring into me, and loving me, and being my safe spaces. My New York family, my roots, thank you for giving me my foundation and for always reminding me that home is where the heart is. I love y’all so much and y’all all know who you are. I’m truly so grateful for each of y’all. To everyone that has ever affirmed my dreams, spoke life into me, or lent me a dollar, THANK YOU! Also, a special shoutout to my best friend, Dwayne for recommending me for this dope opportunity.
