Meet Eric Moeller | Founder of Freewyld

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Moeller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The biggest factor in Freewyld’s success is how much we care about the guest experience. It’s not just about a place to stay. It’s about creating an environment where people can truly unplug, slow down, and reconnect. ‘Wyld Mode’ is at the core of everything we do. From the design of our cabins to the little surprises we leave for guests, every detail is intentional. People don’t just remember the stay. They remember how it made them feel. That’s what keeps them coming back.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Freewyld is all about creating spaces where people can disconnect from their screens and reconnect with what really matters—nature, themselves, and each other. We’re not just another place to take a vacation. We focus on curating experiences that help guests slow down and be present. That’s what sets us apart.
Getting here wasn’t easy. Building something new never is. There were challenges in finding the right property, nailing the guest experience, and growing in a way that stays true to our vision. But we stayed focused, surrounded ourselves with the right people, and kept pushing forward. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success comes from consistency. You have to show up, put in the work, and keep learning.
What excites me the most is seeing people embrace ‘Wyld Mode.’ When guests tell us they put their phones away, had deeper conversations, or felt truly present for the first time in a long time – that’s the win. That’s why we do this.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Idyllwild for a week, I’d want them to experience the best of what makes this place so special: nature, community, and great food.
Day 1 – Settle into Wyld Mode
We’d check into Freewyld and get them off their phone and into the right mindset. No screens, just a good old-fashioned relaxation, some stargazing, and catching up next to the fire.
Day 2 – Hiking & Local Eats
We’d spend the day hiking up Devil’s Slide Trail—the views are unbeatable. Afterward, grab dinner at Ferro, one of the best spots in town for wood-fired pizza and a good cocktail.
Day 3 – Climbing & Coffee
Idyllwild is famous for rock climbing, so we’d hit up Tahquitz Rock or Suicide Rock for some adventure. Not a climber? No problem—just watching is an experience. Afterward, we’d grab coffee at Pure Bean and take it easy in town, stopping into some of the quirky local shops.
Day 4 – Lake Hemet & Sunset Views
A morning drive to Lake Hemet for some kayaking or paddleboarding is fantastic. The afternoon would be spent at Idyllwild Nature Center, soaking in the quiet. For sunset, we’d head up to Inspiration Point—it’s hands-down one of the best places to watch the sky light up.
Day 5 – Creative & Cozy Day
Idyllwild has a huge creative community, so we’d check out local art at Idyllwild Art Alliance or maybe even take a pottery class. After that, we’d just chat and chill at the Wine Finch, a laid-back spot in the center of town with great organic wines.
Day 6 – Local Brews & Live Music
We’d start at El Buen Cacao, which has some of the best chocolate and coffee. Then, a laid-back afternoon at Idyllwild Brewpub, where the beer is cold and the views are solid. If it’s a weekend, we’d end the night at a live music spot—there’s always something happening.
Day 7 – Slow Morning & Goodbyes
A slow breakfast at the Red Kettle to soak in the last bit of Idyllwild’s magic before heading out. Maybe one last quiet walk through town, just to make sure they leave fully recharged and ready to return.
Idyllwild is one of those places that makes you want to slow down, breathe deeper, and stay longer than you planned. It’s why I love it and why I know they’d leave already thinking about their next trip back.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s no way I’d be where I am without the people around me. First, my team at Freewyld—this brand wouldn’t exist without their passion and dedication. They push me to think bigger and execute at a higher level every day. I also have to shout out my mentors and the STR community. Learning from others who have been in the trenches has been huge. And of course, my wife. She’s supported me through every crazy idea and late-night strategy session. Building something meaningful is never a solo effort, and I’m grateful for every person who’s been part of the journey.
