We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Bledsoe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started the business to share the my love for kaftans, and the feeling of freedom when wearing one. Kaftans to me are a way of life, they are much more than just a beach cover up or your granny’s mumu!
I wasn’t able to find kaftans that I loved, so I decided to make my own special and unique pieces.
I added on turbans to the business as a natural evolution of styling a kaftan, and more surprises to come!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Tayloraye is a direct to consumer business sold online and at outdoor markets. Kaftans and turbans are all made in Los Angeles in small crafted batches. I am proudly part of the slow fashion movement, The kaftan prints are all unique to Tayloraye, many of them created from scratch, it’s like wearing a piece of art. The ethos of the brand is to create sustainable product, a kaftan you will have in your closet for years to come.
The environment and the punishment fast fashion has caused an acute awareness of all products used in the making and shipping of Tayloraye products. Scraps of all left over fabric are put to use to keep the out of landfills.
Im most proud of creating a business on my own during the pandemic. Navigating all the paperwork, starting a commerce website and learning selling and promoting on social media , these were daunting tasks, but all worth it knowing it was mine! You Tube university was always on my lap top to guide me along the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is such a fun city to visit – It has so much to offer! Venice beach is always a must. Abbot Kinney has exciting restaurants and boutiques. Walking the canals and of course the Venice boardwalk for a colorful bohemian stroll- rollerskating, music, art, there’s never a dull moment. After that a cruise up PCH for beautiful views and a sunset.
I live in Silver Lake and a few of my fave spots are right next door- Griffith Park and Barnsdall art park. I love to be outside whenever possible and these two parks offer breathtaking views, great for hikes and hanging out. Griffith Park has the legendary observatory, zoo, and Autry museum. The windy drive up though the neighborhood is always fun. I love architecture and to drive around and gaze at the homes. Barndall park is a peaceful oasis on a hill in the middle of our city. There’s a art gallery and lots of grass to sit and picnic. You can tour the Hollyhock house, a Frank Lylod Wright masterpiece. This would be finished up with a dinner at Little Doms in Los Feliz and a night cap at the Dresden.
Last but not least is a trip to the desert. Palm Springs and Joshua Tree are places I frequent often to rest and recharge. I always feel so inspired after visiting these towns.
Palm Springs for the mid century architecture, sunshine and relaxation. Every trip includes a dinner at EL MARISOL the best margarita in town. Joshua tree filled with artists and musicians this is a creative oasis. The Joshua Tree national park to view space like rock formations and Joshua trees galore! I love taking pictures here , It feels otherworldly. Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown a fave place to eat BBQ and catch a rock show.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest fan and constant source of force is my mother Penelope, she was the first person to jump online and say lets get this business started! From childhood my Mom has always encouraged my art and enthusiastically told me to keep it up.
When I told my parents I wanted to go to school to be a fashion designer they could not have been more supportive.
Today I always bounce ideas off my Mom, talk about my dreams and aspirations of where I want to take my company. She always listens patiently and encourages me to GO FOR IT! Thank you Mom, I love you.
I also want to give a shout out to the rest of my family and friends that have been relentless in lifting me up, cheering on my small victories, showing up to my markets, and always having kind words of encouragement and love.
