We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Chan Stenvall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica Chan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
First off, thanks for having me! I am very excited and honored to do this interview with you. I do content creation on YouTube and Instagram, but my content is more geared towards Instagram noaways @ericaychan. I share my lifestyle through pictures and videos on social media. The thought process behind starting my own business was very simple because creating content is something I enjoy doing regardless of the situation. I love to do it for fun. I enjoy putting different outfits together and taking pictures in different places and cool hidden little spots around the world. I like to use content to challenge others to gain a new perspective on a place, or take a different lens when looking at something mundane. It is also very fun for me to edit these pictures and create a stylistic piece of art in photo form to share with my followers. My feed is very curated, and I meticulously select images and edit them in a way to grab the audience’s interest. Not only am I in front of the camera, but I am behind it as well, providing creative direction in terms of the purpose of the photo. How the picture should be taken, from what angle, and what elements to be included and focused on. Each picture tells a story. I also love short form video content, and some of my favorite Instagram reels I have created are my “proposal” and “bridal/wedding-related” ones. Overall, I enjoy the creative process of sharing my experiences with others and inspiring them in some way. I am sharing my life as I carry on through this wonderful world, and I hope to encourage the audience to love and appreciate what life has to offer. A picture is worth a thousand words, and sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. That is why I love capturing these moments and memories. What turned out as something I did as a creative outlet has turned into a small but mighty following, and amazing brands reaching out to me to shoot and film content. I have had a broad range of partnerships throughout the years, some of which include collaborations in fashion/jewelry/perfumes, coffee, food, home decor, dietary supplements, and so many more. I love to work with passionate, incredible small business brands in showcasing their products that I genuinely love with my audience.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There have been many people in my life before that have mocked my social media, telling me that I try too hard to become an influencer. There have been many people that tell me to give up, and people that say what I do has no meaning and that they get tired of what I do. Some very harsh things. What I have learned from this is you have to block out the haters and nay-sayers and have confidence in yourself. That is the most important thing. It does not matter what other people say about you or what they believe, the only thing that matters is that you believe in yourself and that you are steadfast and strong in what you want to do. I started out with zero followers and now, I am so grateful to be introduced to so many amazing brands. I have had to overcome challenges of doubt and insecurity, but I am also nowhere near where I want to be. I just would encourage people to never give up and keep going. I also want the world to know regarding my social media that I hope to inspire them to share their life, because someone out there is very interested! Everybody is unique in their own way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA). DTLA has a special place in my heart because I met my now husband, Andrew, at USC, which is close to downtown. I would start off the Los Angeles tour by taking them to Intercontinental DTLA, which is a beautiful, tall building that offers awe-inspiring views of the whole city as well as delicious, multi-faceted cuisine, something for everyone. Then, I would take them to the nearby Arts District, which has many gorgeous colorful murals that can make amazing photo-ops. and great hang-out spots to drink and eat. Then, I would make my way to the Westside to Griffith Park and have a relaxing picnic brunch and walk their loop trail. Finally, I would go to Santa Monica, stop by the pier, and finish off at Malibu and wear comfortable shoes to walk El Matador Beach and eat dinner at Malibu Farm. Malibu is one of my favorite spots, I actually got married at Malibu West Beach Club! Which in itself is a beautiful venue on an ocean deck overlooking Zuma Beach. Hope you enjoy your time in Los Angeles!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely! I want to give a shout-out to my parents. From a young age, I had a fascination with photos. Even at 5 years old, my favorite thing to do when traveling was to strike a pose like a model and smile for the camera in front of something I found cool and interesting, like a majestic art sculpture or breath-taking scenery of nature. And they always encouraged me to do so. Even to this day, they are so happy to help me take pictures and they get so happy when they find out I am working with a cool brand. I am also launching my new business very soon, “Andrica Events”, in the wedding planning and design industry. I was inspired to start this business and really going for it after planning my own Malibu wedding last July without a planner or coordinator. My new husband will also be involved in the business (The business is called Andrica Events because that is our ship name, Andrew+Erica). I have to give a shout-out to him as well because he is primarily the one behind the camera taking in my direction and supporting me. I have a lot of good people behind me supporting and encouraging me to chase my dreams and follow my passion.
