We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, how do you think about risk?
In January of this year, I decided to take a big risk. I quit my 6-figure, salaried job that I’d had for 7 years. People approached me on my last day in the office, marveling at the “big leap” I was taking. “You’re so brave!”, “I wish I could be like you!” What many didn’t realize is that I had been preparing to take this risk for years.
As a Type A person, I’m extremely risk-averse. The idea of becoming a full-time artist had been in the back of my mind for years. When I turned 30, I took a hard look in the mirror and asked myself what I was waiting for. Over the next year, I made a plan to prepare myself to take the leap. I saved all of my money. I made pottery before work, after work, on weekends! I tried new things, opened a business bank account, invested in new equipment, etc. I prepared everything I could.
And then, the time came and I quit my job. I remember the first day I was officially “self-employed”. I had expected to feel scared and regretful— but instead I felt PREPARED. I really think preparation is key.
My favorite artist, Gracie Abram’s, says this about risks: “I’m jumping in the deep end, it’s more fun to swim in. Heard the risk is drowning, but I’m gonna take it.”
Risks ARE scary, and I’ve found it to be so important to prepare in every way I can. Make that risk really worth it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Erica Moore Pottery combines wheel-thrown forms with hand-sculpted, delicate florals to create one-of-a-kind vases, bowls, mugs, wall art, and more to decorate and bring springtime to your home. The pieces have been featured by popular designer, Studio McGee.
After years of puttering around pottery studios, I finally found my own niche within this art form: eternal handmade ceramic flowers. I love the femininity and delicate nature of these designs. And more than anything, I LOVE making them. Each piece is unique.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a west-sider through and through. My perfect day would take me down PCH, grabbing a breakfast burrito at Lily’s Malibu, and then picking any beach off PCH and spending the day there. Take me to the beach and leave me there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have believed in me every moment on this journey of self-employment as an artist. Our group chat is called “EMP Board of Directors”, because I value their input so much! I wouldn’t be anywhere without them.
