Meet Erik Lundmark | Composer and Film Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erik Lundmark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erik, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had always been a freelancer, a hired gun, and I was thinking, one day the phone will stop ringing, and I don’t want to wait for that as I will probably be too old to start something new then. So I decided to start my own business in order to control my future.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I keep adding hats to my resume. First it was all music. I had my own band. We toured and made 5 albums. In my late twenties I started writing music for TV in Europe, and it made me want to come to Los Angeles and compose music for movies. After 15 years of composing for film in LA, I got interested in editing, both picture and sound. I added the editing hat to my skills. Later I produced my own shows which also made me a photographer and director. Because I had produced my own content, I wanted to learn about the business of showbiz. So we expanded Leomark Studios to be a distribution company too, and not just production.
Comparing the creative world with the business world, you must be very flexible in the business world in order to find your own niche. Creating something is easy and very satisfying. But you are making a product that has to fit in somewhere in the commercial marketplace. It helps you to be aware of where it fits in before you get lost in the creation. That is if your goal is to make money from your creations. If you only care about the art itself and you have a day job, you don’t have to worry about that of course. But be clear and honest to yourself what it is you’re trying to do before you set off making it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is such a diverse and dynamic place. Not a typical city, but more of a large area. I would take visitors to the beach of course. The rooftop bar at Hotel Erwin in Venice is a great place to watch the sunset from. Duke’s in Malibu where you can see the dolphins every day at happy hour. The balcony at Shutters is nice too. Art district downtown is fun as is Smorgasburg at the Row downtown every Sunday morning. Hollywood Bowl is a must in the summer. And if you like classic car culture, there are car shows every weekend around town. Try to get to know a magician that can give you a pass for The Magic Castle, one of my absolute favorite spots.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I had the honor and pleasure to study with Michael Gibbs at Berklee College of Music. He treated me like someone with potential and it brought out the best in me. It made me feel confident that I could accomplish anything.
