We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Weitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erika, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As an experimental photographer, risk is essential to success. I don’t think you can make art and avoid it. Most people understandably avoid risk because they want to avoid failure. But both risk and failure seem to be fundamentally built into the creative process. They are necessary steps towards success. I try to get all my failures out early in the process so I can learn from them and move on. I want to know what I’m capable of and that requires risking failure and pushing the boundaries.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work spans from experimental darkroom photography, AI, documentary photography and sculpture while all focusing on themes of deep past, far future, and how the human psyche travels within those realms. I aim to challenge and expand the way we experience our inner and outer world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Cruise up Angeles Crest and hike to a waterfall or drive up PCH and stop and a few different beaches during the day. Night time, meet up with some friends and check out some galleries or see what bands are playing. Late night, taco truck.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I could shoutout because no one does this alone. I came up in the LA underground creative scene so shoutout to the community as a whole. Everyone who not only shows up to each others events but also helps plan, build, produce, promote and support each other in infinite ways. It takes a village.
