We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Cafferty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, what do you attribute your success to?
Relationships. I’ve made so many connections with people inside and outside of my industry since the beginning of my freelance career. It’s why, after 6 years, my business is still successful. Without word-of-mouth referrals, I wouldn’t have worked with many of my favorite clients! I’m also in a unique position, as co-founder of Remote ID, to have made networking into a second business. Now I have experienced remote workers in a variety of industries joining my community and directory without me having to seek them out.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been a winding road… just the way I like it! I began freelancing in the social media space before I realized that I could get paid to write. I started writing newsletters, blogs, and website copy. From there, I built up enough confidence to think, “Hey, maybe I can be an author like I’ve always wanted.” That turned into me freelancing for wellness clients while I brought a story I wrote in middle school home economics to life. My first children’s book is now coming out in summer 2024! It wasn’t a straight path to get here and I certainly learned a lot along the way, but the skills I’ve gathered throughout the years all brought me to where I am now. I want to remind everyone reading this that you are capable of living out your dreams, but you have to believe they’re worth chasing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the Richmond, VA area so there’s plenty to do! I’d start with a walk to my favorite local vegan cafe for coffee and chocolate croissants. Then I’d bring everyone to the VMFA, a fantastic art museum. Afterward, we’d stop by a relaxed taco joint for chips and queso. While we’re there, we can play pool and hang out. When we finished eating, I’d walk over to Carytown to explore the vintage and antique shops and also find some independent bookstores to browse. We’d end the night in my backyard enjoying the evening outside.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank everyone I’ve met along my freelance journey. There isn’t one person I’ve connected with who hasn’t taught me something I’ve carried with me. 3 specific people come to mind though, so I’ll share their wisdom with you.
When it feels like you can’t take a break, that’s when you need to the most (Kristy Black). Trust that money can come to you from places known and unknown (Alyssa Blackwell). You don’t need a fancy degree to go after what you want, you just need to believe in yourself and make it happen (Chelsea Giles).
