We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Memento and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, how do you think about risk?
Every decision I’ve ever made has been a risk, from moving from a small town in Spain to LA to pursuing music as a career but at the end of the day everything pays off. A solo music career is a lonely and long journey and risk is a stable partner in it but in my opinion without risk there’s no surprises in life. Everything I’ve achieved so far is because I haven’t feared taking that risk, it’s scary that’s for sure but I would have hated not getting somewhere, from writing a lyric to exploring different sounds, if fear would have been stronger than the need to explore.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been making music since I can remember. I come from a family of very creative people from music to photography, passion for movies and art so since I was a kid I’ve been surrounded by it. My family got me a classical guitar when I was 8, then I went through a phase of hating it from the classes that made me play ‘kids songs’ and left it in my garage for a couple years. But then my teenage years came by and with them a need of expressing myself some kind of way and the guitar was still there. I’ve never stopped playing since and that was the moment I started what we could call my music journey.

I’m currently releasing my new ep and I always find those moments around a release really introspective. It’s made me think about my background, where I come from and artist that have really influenced me along my path of becoming a musician. I make latin alternative music and finding my voice and spot in the music world is still a struggle but every show, every song and every interaction with someone who has appreciate my work makes it worth it. I put everything I have on my in every project, from lyrics to production, the art and the show.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favourite things to do is to show little gems in LA to my friends. I would definitely go check some vinyls at Supervinyl in Hollywood, get a coffee at Sightglass and go to Jet Rag to find some vintage. Also love the movie theaters we have in the city, Vista Theatre, Alamo, Los Feliz Theater, New Beverly, Aero, Braindead Studios… there’s so many great places to watch classic and new movies. I also love going to concerts of course, some of my usual small venues are Gold Diggers, Lodge Room, The Goldfish, Zebulon is a must!, Permanent Records… again, so many great places with amazing artist around doing their thing. And a little out of LA day in Topanga Canyon is also a must, shoutout to my friends in Topanga Living Cafe!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey wouldn’t make any sense without the people that are part of my everyday life. From my bandmates, close friends, family and everyone that has been part of this project. As cliche as it might sound, without the people who support you everyday you’re nothing and specially in a solo career like mine. There’s so many people that have said yes to things just because they loved the project even though their name wasn’t in it, so for that I’ll be forever grateful.

Also, I’m absolutely thankful to so many albums that have given me joy, tears and hope. Growing up, music was the way I found to not feel lonely and different. It was absolutely surprising to me that there was someone singing about something that I was personally going through and then finding a community that would like the same music I liked was mind blowing. So for that shoutout to everyone who writes and makes music, I’ll be forever grateful to those who made me feel understood!
