We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started making jewelry in the fall of 2018 while I was a freshman in college at UC Berkeley. What started as selling a few pairs of earrings to friends became a side hustle to support myself through college and eventually a career. Before fully committing to my business, I was on path defined by my family’s view of success. I took all the right classes in high school, got the right grades, was accepted into a top university, and was studying to be an architect. Despite my love for architecture, I did not feel fulfilled. Becoming a junior architect was not going to be enough. I did not know how I was going to get there, but I knew I wanted much more from life. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, jewelry became that key to reaching my dreams. Once I fully committed myself to this business, I saw my confidence grow, and hope for my future was reborn.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Success does not happen overnight or in the way you may thought it would. I tried many marketing and selling approaches before I found ones that worked for me. What works for one person many not work for you. Try as many approaches as possible and see what sticks.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them up the coast on a road trip to Big Sur. Stop along the way at Nepenthe for some good food and to check out the views.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is dedicated to my mom. She has been my rock while trying to balance being a full-time college student and business owner. After working full-time as a paralegal during the week, she helps me every weekend at jewelry shows across LA. Her strength, raising my sister and I by herself, inspires me everyday.
