We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Walsh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want my legacy to be the way I make people feel. We are incredibly lucky as hairstylist, we get uninterrupted time with people from their very busy lives. I feel like this time is so valuable because we not only get to build a real connection with them, but we also get to hear about what they are liking or not liking about their appearance and we have the tools to shift that to make them feel more like themselves or more like the way they want to see themselves. Some of the clients I have met while behind the chair have turned into beautiful friendships and I wouldn’t have met these people if I was in a different career. I really value each client that comes into my chair and I absolutely love hearing their story and learning about them.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So I have been a hairstylist since 2012. I have definitely learned a lot through my experience. I started in this industry when I was 21 years old, and I had a lot of growing up to do. Thankfully, I was open to change and learning and growing, and if I hadn’t been, I don’t think I would be where I am today. I think I look at some of the challenges I faced as a younger stylist and a younger woman in my early 20s and, I’m so grateful that I kept going and kept meeting people that inspired me to be better. Not just a better stylist, but a better human. I think that human connection has so much to do with our industry because we want people to feel good. Not just on the outside but on the inside as well whenever they leave our chair. My favorite of hair to do is considered lived in color. I love kind of adding to someone’s natural and enhancing certain things. I think growing up in Redondo Beach and always having a love for the Beach has inspired me to bring that style of Beachy, natural looking hair.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in South Redondo right now, Definitely start by taking them to hi-fi down in the Riviera. I would bring my two dogs and take them on a walk from hi-fi along the Esplanade. For people that are not familiar with the Esplanade. It’s a beautiful pathway along the beach that is higher than the actual ocean so you get a beautiful view of our coast. Then I would probably take them up to Terranea in Palos verdes Where you get an epic view again of our coastline. And lastly, I would finish off with sushi dinner at Fansea in El Porto
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love this question. I couldn’t agree with it more. I think that I have many people to be honest that have helped me get to where I am today. I have a beautiful family that has supported me through many different walks of life. I have beautiful friends that have supported me. I have had many mentors in this industry that I have learned so much from some of them being Stylists that I have assisted for, some of them being Stylists that had been working in this industry longer than me. Part of the reason I love working in a salon is because you get to meet so many different stylists and learn so much from all of them. I still to this day learn from other stylists I work with and even some of our amazing assistants, It can be as simple as a new tool they started using.
I think the person I would like to give a little extra recognition would be our incredible salon owner Evalyn. Evelyn has been the most encouraging, inspiring, and just bad ass of a boss. She teaches us constantly, she is always there to listen, and her commitment to growing her business is truly inspiring, especially being another woman. I think it’s really special that she really takes time to get to know any stylist before hiring to make sure we have a genuine & strong team that can support each other. I truly look up to her as a stylist and a business owner.
