Meet Ethan Carling | Artist /Musician/Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ethan Carling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always love recording, writing, producing, and performing. My production obsession turned into a mixing and mastering obsession which brought me here. I just released my debut album “i feel like an alien” which was almost entirely produced, written, mixed, and mastered by me. It’s a conceptual album about my person faith crisis and the confusing evolution of my world view throughout the covid pandemic.
It took a few years to accomplish. It’s a vulnerable album that required a lot of courage to write. I had a lot of fear that I would offend my friends and family. Ultimately I love all the songs and am extremely proud of how it turned out.
I learned that people can hear and feel authenticity. It has inspired me to always be authentic and to always create things that I love.
I hope to inspire people to express themselves. To give themselves and others space to be creative. There is room for everyone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Eat. My ever-growing list.
The Lonely Oyster- incredible seafood
Din Tai Fung- Can’t go wrong with soup dumplings and string beans
Joy on York- Simple Taiwanese comfort foods at reasonable prices
Angels Tacos- best street tacos in LA
Melo Melo- perfectly sweetened coconut desserts
Sticky Rice – Beef Panang Curry
Spoon and Pork – Classic Filipino flavors with creative twists
Fun:
Point Dume – Incredible sights. It’s my favorite beach because it’s dynamic. Trails to hike, rocks to climb. So much life!
Wi Spa – 24 hour Korean spa. It’s the greatest reset after a long week. I love going from the hot tub to the cold pool and taking deep breaths.
The Huntington Gardens – it’s just beautiful. Can be a little crowded on weekends but the gardens are breathtaking. Never seen so many succulents.
The Broad – Maybe my favorite building in LA. Very modern and clean. FREE!
LACMA – more art! It’s inspiring and the exhibits rotate frequently.
Windsor Blvd Bike Trailhead – There is so much to explore. I feel like a kid when I go. There is a small stream plenty of trees and birds and just showcases the beauty in and around LA.
UCB Improv Show – The shows are admittedly pretty hit or miss, but that’s the fun. Seeing improv comedy is really inspiring to me.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my fiancé, my friendly community of artists and the internet.
I learn so much online. I seek out great books, advice, and great cyber-mentors in my free time to help me in my pursuits as an independent artist. I have been inspired recently by a few books “The E-Myth Revisited” which answers question about small business failures and successes. “Think and Grow Rich” has inspired me to have more belief in myself and to create more systems to help me accomplish my dreams.
Dan Koe has an inspiring YouTube channel about the age of one-person businesses that has been motivating to me as well.
